What passenger seat upgrades would you recommend that would still allow use of the OEM driver seat and passenger backrest?

The wife claims the passenger seat on our 2000 Std. is not very comfortable at least in regard to traveling any distance.  I'd like to improve her ride comfort.  I don't yet have any issues with the drivers seat comfort, but haven't had the oppotunity to try any aftermarket seats to compare it to either.  At this point, I'm not ready to splurge and replace both the driver and passenger seats.

Divot, I bought a sheep skin pad for the wife, works great for about 75 miles.

I made the passenger seat using an OEM rider's seat (pre 2000).  I just picked up a post 2000 rider's seat and I think I will try again.  It was not that difficult and this was my very first try at making any type of custom seat.  (The rider's seat is a Diamond (same as Hartco)).  I have about $100 invested in both seats.

If passenger comfort is your objective it would be hard to beat the Ultimate.

The problem is you may end up wanting to replace the rider's saddle even though you don't have to.

I upgraded by going to the "Ultimate" and after 16K mile, my gal is very happy with it and has promoted it to others who want something better then OEM.

I bought the wife an Ultimate and after she saw how much better it was she let me get one for myself. Not a bad idea.

I can about guarantee she will be happily comfortable riding any distance and miles with an Airhawk passenger pillion cushion on top the existing seat.  Small and large (which ever fits her best) are the same price ($130), which isn't cheap, but WAY cheaper than a new (or used) set of seats.  Inflated about 2/3, she will float on air; and will also sit up into the slipstream about 2/3-3/4" higher.  And if you are solo, you can use it too, though the drivers medium is a better fit.

Best price I know.

Every once in awhile Des from Ultimate has a trade in rear seat.

Call him and see what he has..

His seat is a little bit wider, thicker and a tad longer than stock.

Stock seat will not fit any lady with a waist larger than 20".     They are the smallest seat I have ever incountered except when we got our 1st Kawasaki 1000 motors....   They ended up being pulled and replaced with radios and other equipment.

Also consider the "spencer mod" at http://greatdaytoride.com/Home_Page.php

Or you could have gel inserts put in and get a sheepskin. That should be as comfy as anything.
When in doubt, ride.

I have a Ultimate pass. seat that's like brand new.  I bought the whole set for my IS but my wife didn't like it so I got her a stock std seat while I kept my Ultimate.  Let me know if you're interested, I'm sure we can make a deal.
