Exhaust gasses on a stock IS

I have a 2000 interstate stock. Under acceleration I get exhaust gasses  circling around me and my passenger. I just ordered exhaust tip to extend the exhaust beyond the bags. Will this solve the problem? Oh the bike has 58K and probably never had the carbs touched. I guess it could need the carbs looked at, but I get decent gas mileage 32-34. I purchased the valk about 3 months ago and I truly love her. Doug

I would make sure sure that the fuel tank vent line is attached properly and there were no fuel leaks at the petcock.The gas cap is also a weak point.Try vaseline on the gas cap gasket.If you park it inside, can you smell gasoline?If so, the fuel cap may be the culprit.I think some of them can discharge fumes through the lock mechanism.

Thank You, But it is burnt exhaust gasses rolling up from behind bike somehow. Oh And there is air wings on the bike. I was thinking of taking them off and testing it out.

Your going to SLOW 

I have a 99 with Baker Airwings and have no such problems maybe things are a little rich in the carbs maybe check your plugs and see what color they are ..

Might be the wings if you get no air around you. I have a dead space infront of me and eveytime i spit or something it always goes forward. Longer pipes may help or get some wind up in your face. Or nose plugs!

Doug, I had a very similar problem. Tied string of yarn around the exhaust tip and found that gasses from the top would come back around to the front. My bike has bakers and an 4" taller windshield over stock. I resolved the issue with 6" longer than stock truck stack slipped over the silencer.~TJ

Thank You to all that answered. Yes I have a taller than stock windshield also. And I think it might be running a little rich. I ordered the 18" stack extensions along with ordering a K&N air filter. Maybe the two of them will do the trick before I have to take it apart for next (winter). Bad word sorry. Thanks Again. Doug

I own a stock IS with a tall windshield. Never had a problem with fumes. Could it be loose manifolds, or bad manifold gaskets? Look for traces of carbon where the manifold enters the head.

When I purchased my 99I/S 3+ years ago, 7.8K miles, it had gas fumes. Especially when I slowed to about 35-40 MPH. The wind would stop moving the fumes pass me and I would smell them. I posted on the board and received a lot of suggestions, some of the same you are receiving now. I changed the petcock because I saw dark brown at the weep hole, still smelled fumes. After that I did nothing except ride the bike and run a lot of gas thru it. I think the continued use of the gas fill cap and a little oil on the gasket mentioned above,  solved the problem, as the bike had sit up for a while.

had the same problem on a trip to seattle, exhaust in the wifes hair, thought the trip was over, never had the problem before, but with pullin a trailer it really circulated bad, put on the turn downs and problem solved.
