Do I really need new bolts???

I've torn into the rearend of my new-to-me I/S and am replacing parts so I'll know the condition of it...changed out the dampers last night and the manual says to replace the bolts that tightens down the plate over the dampers.  I can tell they've been off before and actually had some red threadlock on them.  Do I really need to get new bolts?  Same with the rear brake disc - manual says to replace those mounting bolts as well anytime you take the disc off.  I haven't had it off yet, but would like to so I can clean the rim good.  I really don't see the need to replace all the bolts, but then again, I'm not a professional mechanic and there must be some reason why the factory wants them replaced.  Comments?

My belief, and I may be wrong, is that the new bolt has thread lock on it.  The reason for the new bolt recommendation (requirement?) is to ensure that the bolt is replaced with one with the appropriate thread lock.

I reused the old bolts for the damper plate.  The damper plate bolts and the disc brake bolts are the same part (or at least the damper plate bolts are used as disc bolts on some Honda model).

I have never seen anywhere else where they recommend replacing bolts.  I replaced my dampners last year and used the same bolts, no problems.  Just cleaned off the old locktite, applied new and torqued as specified.

I think alot of what's written in the Honda Service manual is influenced by lawyers .... Re-applying some BLUE loctite (medium strength) should be fine.

Did you get another Interstate Dave ? I changed my dampers and used the same bolts that was many miles ago ...No problems whatsoever.

No, Joe, but this is the first time I've torn into this Valk's rear end...bought it at the beginning of last year's riding season and just rode it...putting a car tire on it now and figured may as well get in there and inspect/replace for a little peace of mind while I'm on the road this year....

I have read and heard before about new bolts on the brake rotors.  I would do it just to be sure if it was me.  Well, heck, it is my bike.  Order the bolts, tightwad!!!!!!!!!

Dave, just out of curiousity how many miles are on those dampers .... how long are they supposed to last and do you lube the pins or leave them dry ??
