Alternate Alternator Covers

Someone on the board was manufacturing stainless steel alternate alternator covers a couple of years back to replace the constantly bubbling plastic ones.  Does anyone know who still may be doing that?

Can't remember his name... the guy who makes bushings for the OEM rear shocks and dampers for the rear wheel.  The cover he made is not stainless... needs to be painted or chromed.  Haven't seen him mention this item in quite some time.  Might be out of production.

Yeah, it just gets too damn warm down there for vacuum chromed ABS. Bubbling starts at the chromes thinnest areas, the corners.

I decided to strip the chrome off and prep for paint when I was painting my fairing & pods. It turned out well but has since warped badly when it got too hot during a carb sync. I should have temporarily removed it. Oh well.

Do you think it would have lasted under normal circumstances?   The one on the bike now has a minor bubble but still looks fairly nice.  I obtained a new one a year or so ago in anticipation of replacement (when it finally gets bad enough).  But I would consider painting one with "chrome" paint if if seems to be durable enough.

Yes, the urethane paint held up. My box fan was not circulating around the alternator enough to cool it during an extended carb sync  and the ABS went to hell. The fan was only directed towards the radiator.

I can only vouch for the heat durability of a urethane paint & clear-coat.

To answer your original question, I believe you are thinking of Gary Eckermann (previously Þrúðr, now Shockbushing Gary).

Last July he stated he stopped making the covers, "but still had a few left."

Thanks, I just emailed Gary to see if he had any covers left.
