Question for some of you extreme long haulers, I may need to go out to Vancouver BC in September and I was thinking of riding out there, I have not done a cross country ride  like that in probably 20+ years, but I woud love to do it. So the question is, is that too short of a time frame or is it possible in 3 days and still be able to enjoy the ride?

whadya think?

If it was me, I'd add another day to enjoy the scenery and the ride...

Till then do a lot of riding to get you butt into some sort of shape to take the excess seat time....   Otherwise you will be walking like ya got poision ivy between your legs........

I don't know how old you are, but 1,000 miles per day will be pretty taxing. I did a similar ride in my early 30's and didn't remember it being a problem at all. Two years agoat age 60, I rode about 800 mile a day for two days and to be honest it was too much for really enjoying the ride. I think this is one of those personal matters that only you can decide. If you decide to go for it, Good Luck and ride safe. Hef

1000 miles per day at an AVERAGE speed of 70 mph will be 14 hours 20 minutes ride time per day for three straight days.

If you average 40 mpg, it'll take 25 gallons of gas per day.  Assuming you have an I/S tank (6.9 gallons), that is 4 gas stops per day.  If you are in-and-out in 10 minutes per stop, that will add 40 minutes of being on the road.

Now you are up to 15 hours per day road time.  Throw in 3 square meals at 20 minutes a piece (meaning you will be eating fast and hopping right back on the bike) and you're up to 16 hours on the road per day for 3 straight days.

Hopefully you would have clear weather the whole way, but if not that will really slow you down.

If it takes you 30 minutes to get ready for bed once you get to the hotel, and 30 minutes to get ready to ride once you get up, you are looking at 7 hours of sleep a night.

So, in conclusion - hope you have an awesome seat and if you do this - you are my hero.  :cooldude:

If you decide to do it - safe travels and keep us posted!

The first day ( 1000 miles ) will be fun...The next two will suck IMO  ...I'm no iron butt and never plan to be after about 700 miles in a day for me the twins start to feel the ride when the twins are over it I'm over it  :cooldude: I average about 25,000 miles per year however that is ridin' the entire 12 months as I don't do PMS.

I've seen alot of people that thought they were cool , but then again Lord I've seen alot of fools.

I must say I am enjoying the responsses and I may add another day to it, I have to see if I can take leave during that time, thats the big issue. If I can I will go and by that time I should have figured out how to post a friggin picture or two.
As I said if I can I will, I am itching to do it again and as for my age, well I am 43 years young and feeling younger the more I think about the ride. So lets see.

I dont know how you could make it without  taking interstate 70 most of the way out to the rockies as going near chicago that ride wont happen and for that matter find a way around St Louis also
I made it to denver in around 30 hours from NYC area and I passed thru Pittsburgh and Indy to see friends 3 days would put me in the sierra nevada's or eastern washington

I start losing concentration at 730 miles or 11 hours and I also make it a point to stop every 130 miles or so to walk and stretch piss and drink (not necessarily in that order).  I dont drink coffee but have been known to gulp down a mountain dew to get the last few hundred miles in.

You can never get UNTIRED so its better to get off the bike and move around a bit while you have your concentration.

3 days to be honest I would say do it in 4 to allow for weather, and a chance to take in the beauty of this country and the canadian rockies is a minimum  I have a russell day long, and mickopegs so comfort is no problem
If you don't know where your going any road will take you there

..

Why?

Why slab it all the way there and back and simply put miles on your bike. Just because you can?

Save your energy for a ride you'll enjoy (my perspective).

You'll need to assess your own ability and perseverence, but I'd say it's not a good idea.  That's three 1000 mile days.  I could do it, but if you haven't done that kind of riding in 20 years it's a rough way to break into long distance riding.

If you're on a Valk, no problem. Go to ironbutt.com  I do lots of long rides. Did 17,259 miles in 15 days in 1991. That WAS a rough on tho for me. Won't do that one again...70 years old now. Doing a 3000 mile one this year in about 65 hours...maybe. Sounds like a fun trip. Good luck if you go.
