Long-Awaited Fork Rebuilding Wrench Party - Sunday 16 May 2010 in Celina, TX

Yes, it's finally on the schedule!      And, Wanderer (who has lots of recent forking experience) will lead us through the process.  As an added bonus for those who are interested, Patron is bringing his very own special tool required to torque the steering head. 

First meet-up option is 8:00 breakfast at Lucy's on the Square in historic downtown Celina.  We'll ride from there to Patron's warehouse to do the work.

Second meet-up option is 9:30 at Patron's warehouse at 316 S Louisiana Street. 

For those not using GPS, take Preston (289) north to FM455 in Celina and go west on 455.  Go over the railroad tracks and take the first left on Louisiana.  If you're going to Lucy's, take the first right on Walnut and the first right on Ohio.  Lucy's is on the right.  Otherwise, continue south on Louisiana and the warehouse is on the left.

VERY IMPORTANT ITEM #1: We need a bike count - a firm bike count - so we can arrange for enough jacks to be transported to the warehouse between now and Sunday. 

VERY IMPORTANT ITEM #2: You need to be sure you are bringing all the required parts and oil you need to do the work you want done.  We will have the required special tools, but bring as many of your own sockets, ratchets, combos, and allens as you can to speed the process.

I'm 1 for breakfast.  They might even serve PIE for breakfast!

If I can get the special tool for the ACE Tourer in time, I'll be one bike.  I have all the bushings, seals, springs, oil, plus a service manual and a jack.

      I can offer up another floor jack (with adaptor).  Some tools and - oh yes - a camera!

I guess I better see if my bag of goodies (that I got ready for the LAST fork rebuild party . . that I didn't make) includes new bushings and/or seals along with the new set of Progressive front fork springs and fork oil.

       What other parts might be smart to have for this event?

I have a jack and adapter available if needed.  I may stop by for breakfast and hang out for a while but don't need any fork work done at this time.

The rebuild bits came yesterday, hopefully I've got all I need...

How much fork oil do I need? One bottle more than enough, or will I need a few? Any particular kind, or just go to a Honda shop and pick up some Honda type, that she came with originally?

(Oh yeah, and it'll kill me getting up that early on a weekend, but I'll be there for the working, prolly won't make breakfast, I think it's illegal to wake up THAT early on a Sunday! )

Honda recommends – Pro Honda Suspension Fluid SS-8, (it is #10 weight fork oil)

22.62 - 22.78 US oz. Right
25.12 - 25.28 US oz. Left

They sold it to me in pints...so 4 - pints to be safe

I might hafta take a rain check... My step-mother-in-law passed away tonight, and my presence is being requested in West Virginia ASAP... (I know she really wants me to go, spousal unit is offering to let me ride there...)

I'll give a definitive yes or no ASAP, but it's looking like I might hafta ride with leaking forks a wee bit longer than I was hoping for...

GodFire is right on the stock earl for the job, but three quarts should do it unless you spill/goof. I know it sounds too easy to screw up, but when you are picking up your parts you do need two of the stop guides, two slide guides, and two sets of the fork seals as well as the fork oil if you are covering all the bases - maybe an upgrade on the springs too? In other words, Honda supplies enough parts by number to do one of the two forks if you only order one of each number. A low mileage bike probably won't need the guides, but if you have the new ones and use them you could save the slightly used ones for next time and wonder where you put them!

Do bring your tools. The idea is for everyone to do their own work with stuporrvision - well, it is going to be Sunday morn.

Where in West Virginia, Serk? My mom was from Auburn in Richie County. I hope all that goes as well as possible. ~Jeff

I've got 2 each of those parts, but haven't gotten the fork oil yet, with the current change of plans, it's looking very likely that I'm gonna get to put a few thousand more miles on the leaky forks... (Sorry for the threadjack, btw...)
