Progressive shock question

Hi Guys,
I have a 98 tourer that is in excellent condition. I bought it used from a dealer and it has a set of Progressive 416 air shocks installed.
I am not sure the difference between the different models, or why this particular one is on my bike. I have had the bike for three years now with no problems.
This winter I removed them to do a tire change. When I laid them down on my bench, a teaspoon of oil came out of the airtube connection on one of them. I didn't realize that this could happen. I must of set it down with the airtube connection pointing down.
Does this indicate that something is wrong with the shock or is this something that can happen if you put it in this position? And, should I replace the little bit of oil that came out?

You just laid the shock down with the port lower than the body of the shock.  Not a problem.  The shocks are air with oil dampening.  The teaspoon of oil shouldn't be enough to cause you  any problems, but try not to lose any more.

Back on the topic of these. It is reasonable to try and rebuild a set of these yourself?

I have a set that needs work, Talked to Progressive and they happily told me they would rebuild / repair them for $35 - $260 depending on the issue. 

Is there a manual or documentation out there somewhere that explains how these are built, and what parts are replaceable?
