Carb adjustment - confused!!!

As one of the final bits before I take my rebuilt Valk for registration I thought that I would check, adjust and sync my carbs (smells as though its running a bit rich).

Now for the confusion  ??? I have read the manual and to say that their recommendation looks convoluted is to put it mildly. I have read through the various threads on the board here and have seen recommendations of 1 3/4 and 2 1/4 turns out for the pilot screws. Which is correct?

Should I do the sync after or before (I presume after) I adjust the pilot screws?

TIA

Sync is the last thing you do. As far as the pilots it will vary with your elevation. A lower elevation will require a pilot to be opened more than a higher elevation. what is your elevation?
If you're lucky enough to ride a Valkyrie, you're lucky enough.

Definitely after.  Anything you do after a sync will just change the sync.  The only reason I can think of to do a sync prior to any other carb work is if you want to do an iterative process.

Colin

Thanks guys for the responses.

Living where I do my altitude on a ride typically varies from 0m above to 400m above but some of the mountains round here are over 1000m above and I live at 186m above.

Which jets do have right now?? 35s or 38s ?? I'll assume 35s, if so, for your altitude[550ft] set them at 2.25 turns then sync.. Check to see where they are set right now so you'll have something to compare them to..

Colin

Thanks Patrick for your answer. The bike came from the UK so I expect it is set for low altitude.

I may be totally wrong here, someone please chime in and correct me if I'm wrong as I don't want to give any bum information.
I use that as a guide 2.25 turns out. Then I throttle up to cruising rpm (on the kickstand) and shut her down and pull the plugs. I read my plugs and adjust each accordingly. I always find a couple seam richer than the others, tweak em back a little, run it test them and adjust again.

I would think it would be better to set them all the same, then balance the carbs, then check the plugs and tweak as needed.  Then Rinse and repeat.

Also I think you should drive the bike not just run it on the stand as the load will effect how much fuel is required to maintain the RPMS.

Actually sync first and heres why sync is the adjustment of all the carbs in relation to each other with a adjustment that depends solely on engine air intake which is a product of engine rpm and pretty uniform at each cylinder. This is a mechanical thing kinda like a air pump or compressor. Basically you have pistons and a common crank so when they move the engine sucks in air. However mixtures are dependent on rpm ,air volume, temp and variances in each cylinder so the mixture Will change with rpm in each and every cylinder. Mixture is also a finer adjustment especially at idle. With that said I would still go back and verify the sync after I was done. You can adjust the sync and the mixture will have minimal effect over the adjustment. But if you adjust the mixture and then sync the mixture may be way off. Usually neither are so far off as to be a real problem as to which is adjusted first, but on new or complete tear downs this applys. Already hit this topic
