Doing spring cleaning in my shed.  I found an unopened gallon of Mobil 1, 15w50 red cap.  It is probably 5 years old.  Since then they have changed bottle and cap colors.  What is the current weight, cap color etc. of the equivalent Mobil 1?
Sorry for opening this can of worms again.  It is raining here in northwestern Ohio and can't ride.

Thanks, Mike

Just this past week I bought a case of Mobil 1 - 15-50 with a red cap.

I was just at Walmart picking up some oil for my truck and the Mobil 1 15w50 was in a new bottle.  Forget about the cap color, just look for the right weight.  I would go ahead and make sure the back does not have "Energy Conserving" on the label.

+1 on what Joe says.  "Energy conserving" in the label on the back is very, very bad.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I believe the new cap color is gold.

I recently tried royal purple in 10w40.  I hear valve noise now I did not before.  I even adjusted the valves to be sure.

I am going back to 15w50 mobile one.

I bought 4 cases when they had it on sale at O'rileys...  went to 2 different stores, they would only sell me 12 bottles (2 cases) at each store.  Dang limits...  :)

Me too Jimmy. I just bought 12 qts. as that'll last me 15K and that'll put me up into next year. Mobil 1 15w50 is my normal oil anyway.

That's why I switched back to Mobil 1 after using Rotella T6 Synthetic for 1 change.

I thought with Mobil 1 you could go like 10-15K (or longer) without changing oil.  Did it change or are ya'll just being extra cautious?

We had a seminar/meeting with a Mobil rep and I asked her about the Mobil 1 and I thought she said, and this is concerning cars, all you have to do is change the filter about 5-7K miles and top it off and your good to go.
Remember, if you are on a bike and wreck with a car no matter how "in the right" you are you are going to lose. RIDE LIKE EVERBODY IS OUT TO GET YOU!!

I think you could easily go 10k or better with mobil 1 but I just can't do it. I know people who do it in their cars.

Me either.  I change it every year... at least so that's more often for me.

I love my valks too much to even THINK about cutting a easy corner like oil.

I use Mobil 1 in my truck and go 12K miles between changes but I do change the filter and add a quart at 6K.  In my Valk I don't go past 5K as the oil also lubicates the transmission and is constantly being smashed between the gears.  That has to do cause faster breakdown than just lubricating an engine.  I can't prove it but it is mho.

I dont care how good your oil is, or how good the filter is......after a while the oil gets dirty.  And even though the lubricating properties of the oil may be good, I cant stand to think of all that dirt going round and round.  Im on synthetic oil now and cant get myself to go much past 5K.......it was NO MORE THAN 3K before on dino oil.  I may be overly cautions but I just cant do the 10-12K on the same oil

What does the Energy conserving matter?

Oils that are labeled energy conserving have friction modifiers that will cause your clutch to slip.

I have a quart of old "red cap" Synthetic Mobil 1 my question is:   Will this oil work with the new, present day Synthetic 15 w 50 Mobil 1?    I can't see letting this go to waste.    Don't mean to open that can of worms.    Need to change oil but don't want to go to Amsoil.

It should be the exact same stuff.  I think all they did was change the marketing (different color cap).

I am going to go back to Mobile 1 15/50 soon.  The royal purple 10/40 makes my valve train loud.
