Riding in Kansas?

We're planning a trip to Utah in a few weeks and I'd like to ride through Southern Kansas. My wifes mom has told her horror stories of grasshoppers in Kansas....

Any time of the year we need to avoid the place??

I don't think the grasshoppers get big enough to carry away small children till July/August.

Stop in some time and we'll show ya the good roads and give you some pointers on dodging cattle and white tail deer !  If that aint excitement,what is?

I think I killed most of the grasshoppers last year when I returned from Inzane.

What route are you taking through NM? You might consider going through Cimmaron and Eagle's Nest, down through Taos and West from there.

I thought that's what Kansas riders did... got together and rode around looking for the curve.

I have a theory too.  The curve ONLY apprears in the HEAT of the summer.  As the road heats up, it ewxpands and eventually, buckles thus creating the curve.  When it cools off in the fall... the road shrinks and the curve disappears.

Not that Indiana is any better.

C'mon Jabba, you might be able to say that about NE Indiana up here  but you have some nice curvy riding in the Hoosier Forest just south of you.  Nothing like the Snake or the Dragon but still nice.

Oh... I was just kidding.  There are some pretty good roads south of me.  I am essentially in Indy, and you gotta go south a ways to find anything that's A LOT of fun.  There is some decent roads though.  I was just teasing our Kansas Brothers and Sisters.

Aw come on Slinger, you know where K-4 is, from Toepicker to 177 south of Manhattan and on west is a purdy good road!  Too bad for Don T, it's in Northern Kansas, there really ain't much down south east to west.  And he's gonna miss the Flint hills completely!   The grasshoppers are overated, though. I't ain't all like this.  hoser

Yes, September, that's when you may hit more than a dozen grasshoppers in one day. Most folks around here aren't afraid of bugs. I guess things are different in Tennessee.

Hey all you kansas haters... Look at it this way... If you get stranded we will just pull along side and ask if you need water... Then point you to the nearest gas station... After all you should be able to see it (since kansas is so flat).  And don't worry every step you take your getting closer.   It is just an illusion from the heat waves coming off the asphalt that might think your not gaining on the distance.

I got me a bloody, fat lip from a big one.  They can hurt at 60+ mph in Sept.

Generally people can find what they're looking for.  Describing all of Kansas in one sentence doesn't really show a depth of understanding.  Please see the tale of the blind men and the elephant.

Don't worry about the grasshoppers.  I've never seen them a serious problem to travelers in Kansas.  The thickest I've ever seen grasshoppers, or crickets for that matter, were in western Colorado and Southern Oklahoma.

We have a curve here in Kansas?!?! I have lived here all my life and been almost everywhere in Kansas and have never seen the curve.

Bugs in Tennessee?? We have a few here but nothing like we got during Love Bug season in south Louisiana. 

I guess between her mom and the movie Wild Hogs she is grasshopperified. Thanks for all the comments and info!! Outside of the Texas Hill Country, those roads were flat, straight, long and smooth! Sure beat the Interstates.
