14mm Freeze Plugs??

Just a quick, hopefully easy question. 

I'm in the process of removing the smog on my Valk.  (Brought on by having to wait for a repaired/repainted tank that decided to start leaking for reason of a shoddy repair done by the previous owner...)

What, exactly, is this 14mm freeze plug that I've read about and how does it work??  I was planning on just JB welding, but have some spare time, so would like to do it in a prettier way. 

I've never messed with a freeze plug before, and have no idea what it is and how to use it.

its basicly a tin cap plug they call it a freeze plug for the reason being it is supposed to a week point for when your motor freezes in the winter it wont crack your block

How is it installed and where does one buy them?

(I won't need any $50 special tools will I??)

nope no 50 dollar tools just a socket and a hammer. any good auto supply store and if they dont have the 14 mm get a 9/16 ones,

Looks simolar to a bottle cap. Put them in the hole and used a small socket and a hammer to tap them in. Way better then JB and a 1/5th of the time. I did JB weld the 2 lower holes.

just be sure that you use a small enough driver so you can get it back out when you drive them in...

14mm or 9/16... and just a small driver to tap it in... got it.  (sweet...)

I guess I'll do the whole JB weld thing on the bottom ones... I don't really feel like making the blank plates on an area that's under the engine and can't be seen anyway.  I'll probably get some sort of high temp gasket material to remake the gasket though.

what I did was take the bottom pipes off and used a pipe cutter on them left about 1" long and filled with jb weld steel let them sit overnight then re-install with new gaskets...so far thats worked on all three of my Valk's

I went with a solid install of the freeze plugs followed with the JB weld to purty them up a little.

I finished a desmog recently and used the 9/16 freeze plugs, got them at NAPA Auto Parts.  Autozone and Advance Auto only sold the freeze plugs in kits.

I filled the holes in the original port plug with solder. I just cut off the tube, cleaned out the hole and held the plug over a propane torch until it got hot enough to melt solder. I filled the hole to the top and filed it smooth after it cooled off. The plug didn't get hot enough to discolor the chrome so they still look great! I also used the orginal hold downs. but that took a little work to save them without damaging them when removing them from the tubes. Overall this is a little more effort, but the finished product looks stock.

I found mine in 14mm at Auto Zone. I was able to purchase as many as I needed, (or they had). They were not on the shelf, several associates did not know. The manager went in the back and brought out a box, assorted by size. Very inexpensive, then dressed it with Kuryakyn chrome spark plug valance

I went to 4 (yes, 4) auto parts stores in Lafayette and Broussard Louisiana.  They all had freeze plugs, but not ONE less than 1 inch!!!

This is sad.  I'm going to have to ORDER 2 dollars worth of parts because no one in this town has what I need... again...
