99 Interstate Fairing Removal

I have a 98 Tourer and I'm buying a 99 Interstate later on today. The Interstate needs to be painted and I'm not familiar with the Interstate fairing and pods. I found a paint shop that will paint the bike at a reasonable price, but I need to bring him all the tins. The question I have is how hard is it to remove the fairing and the pods? Does the skin of the fairing slide off after removing some hardware? How hard is it to remove the trunk ? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Removing the pods is very easy.

The only tough part about removing the painted portion of the fairing is that some of the inserts that the screws holding the fairing in will likely strip out of the fairing. You can glue them back into place after you get the fairing off (this will make much more sense once you start taking the fairing off!).

The trunk comes off easily enough, there are just a TON of screws to remove. Wrap some tape around the radio and CB antennas before removing the trunk so that the trunk doesn't get scratched during removal. Ask Alph why I now think tape is essential!

   Just take your time.Remove speaker panels first.
Then mark and unplug wires going into fairing. Then you will see the
mounting bolts that hold it to the front end. Unplug wire harness under
right side cover for trunk. Also att for radio and CB.
  Four bolts for trunk under covers inside trunk.
  See if you can find the old parts fish we have here some where.
  That will help you see how things go together.
Like I said,just take your time and mark everything and put your
bolts and nuts into maked zip lock bags.

An old rice farmer once told me cut your way in and weld your way out. It was how they worked on the old combines. Really it not hard to remove fairing or pods.

5 bolts-- there is one on the front below the passenger backrest.

I have taken my fairing off in under 10 minutes! (in the parking lot of a Chinese restaraunt!) Of course, it wasn't the first time but it's not hard.  Remove the 4 screws on each speaker panel, 2 screws holding the chrome trim under the windshield, 4 8mm bolts holding the windshield on, 2 10mm bolts holding the vent scoop, 2 sheet metal screws at the top and 2 10mm nuts on the stay behind the speaker panels.  Slip it off and disconnect the wires the the headlights and turn signals and it's off!  If any of the screws spin but don't loosen, just pry behind them while turning and the notorious "Pem Nuts" will come out of the fairing.  You will need to epoxy them in before you re-install.

As for the pods... after you removed the 3 Allen head bolts holding them in place (3 on each) you have to pull the side out, just like you pull the side covers. They snap in place the same way. Then you can take them off.
