I have removed the gas tank and the petcock from the tank. I cannot get the screen out without destroying it. It seems to be stuck, is there a trick or does it just pull out from the bottom once you have the o-ring out?

Thanks for any help

Mine was probably the original. Had to grab the lip that was showing and twist. It will have to be replaced they stick in there pretty good.

Thanks guys, I got it  and and managed not to damage it, if I ever do this again I will order one with the rebuild kit. I called all the dealerships with in 50 miles, no one has one. I cleaned it up but was not dirty at all hardly anything on it. It is the original and the bike is a 98.

The petcock rebuild was very easy and I am about to put her back together, thanks again for the info.

Is there anyway to check the rebuild before installing the tank on the bike or is it sufficient to put the tank back on and make sure the bike runs out of gas when the petcock is in the off position?

To test all you have to do is attach a vacuum hose to the nipple that comes off the coverset (not the weep hole) and suck on it gently with the valve in the on....gas should flow and then stop when you stop  or turn valve to off .............if thats what it does it works....if it leaks with no vacuum or doesnt flow with vacuum then it doesnt work

Thanks  Chris I will give it a try

Thanks for all the help. Gas flows in both on and reserve with some vacuum pressure on the cover set nipple and does not flow in off with the vacuum pressure so I guess I got it all together right.

Thanks again

good news, now see if you can get the tank back on without pinching the vent tube and you might just be home free. :D
