using 12v accessory drop in harness.

hey guys. have been using a garmin 205 gps on our trip. its really nice to have. am working on hooking up to the accessory taps under the right side cover but only get 5 volts when the key is turned on. Have cleaned the connections and the 5amp fuse but dosen't change voltage. meter does read over 12 volts at the battery, 14.4 when engine is running. any idea why the reading is low? could even use any ideas on the process also. thanks, ken

I haven't had this, but I seem to recall that someone else had the 5V problem.  It turned out he was connecting to the Interstate CB's passenger push to talk switch terminals.  My service manual shows these to be one red and one black wire.  The terminals you should be looking for are one green and one white/black wire (Interstate), or one green and one light-green/red wire (Standard and Tourer).

Sounds like you found  the wrong wires you want the  black/white and  green  both female connections if  have the honda foglights installed the foglight harness is pluged into it allready

Gryphon is right-- you're hooked into the passenger push-to-talk terminals.

The terminals you want are buried in the wiring harness. I must have spent over an hour trying to find them since they were tucked back behind everything else. Getting the terminals pulled out to where I could use them took a lot of work as well.

thanks guys. it makes more sense now. will have to dig deeper and fing the correct wires thanks , will let you know how it goes. mnrider

Just a suggestion.....  why not hook up a power port directly to the battery with a fuse and put it up on or near the bars where the GPS will be?  If it is not plugged in, it won't drain the battery... and it don't draw much anyhow.  I have had a few times I wanted to play with the GPS when the bike was off... and my bike key doesn't have to be "on" nor do I have to take the GPS out of the cradle.  I can even listen to music via the GPS MP3 Player when parked without using the audio system on the bike.  I have one there and also behind or next to the passenger seat  where I usually  hook up a cell phone charger and put the phone either in my saddlebag or trunk to charge the phone (on trips mostly).   Just a thought..... and you don't have to mess with factory wiring since you can take it right off the battery.

I found the drop in the factory loom. went to radio shack and bought a cig lighter or power adaptor. i just put about 3 feet of wire on it and ran it up under the seat and out into the right saddle bag. that way my wife can plug in and navigate. its like having two navigators, sometimes both talking at once. i like having it switched with the key. that way i won't leave something on and drain the battery. if i ever want to use the garmin up front i will have to add one up front, which i should do instead of wait until i want to use it. always great to have your input, it helps me out alot. happy trails! mnrider

I have them (and my heated grips and GPS) wired to an aux bus that is connected to the battery by a solenoid operated by the ignition key. Each circuit has its own fuse.

Charge my cell phone and netbook while on the road.

Also used for my home made electric cloths.

I love the key for power idea.... If only it worked with the boss on back.      :2funny:
