Broken SPEEDOMETER GEAR, 97 Tour
«

After putting front tire back on my 97 Tour I rode the valk about 1/10 mile and speedometer quit working.
Took it home and investigated and found that the male end in the speedometer gear, where the cable slides in was broken off.
I am getting ready to replace the gear but would like to know if this is something that I done wrong so i dont repeat the same mistake.
I have had the front wheel off several times and have never had a problem.

Without watching how you do it, it is hard to tell if you did someting wrong.
I will however say this, they are touchy, and any bind will cause failure.....
I have 241,000 on mine and so far, knock on wood, I've only lost 1 speedo head.
That was due to a driver failurer ro comply.....

I would think that your home is built out of wood, but with 241,000 miles on your bike, I'd bet you are not home often enough to knock on anything.

If you are riding and it is a must that you keep your eyes on the road, you are riding too fast.
