I think I need to change the air in my tires.         I understand if you don't do that every so often, they will go from 35 lbs cold to over 47 lbs after riding on a hot day for a few miles . .

I'm with Jam.  Definately would like a few of you guys to ride the bike and let me know what you think. I'd like to have the rear end looked at for sure, but anything else the experts can think of to evaluate, I would appreciate.  Anxious to hang out and meet some of the club.

Doing wrench party tomorrow! Install lift kit and new tires and wheels.  Oh, yeah. That's not on the Valk.

So far it looks like 5 on Saturday and 6 on Sunday.

If you don't have the location yet, please EMAIL me and include your real name and forum handle.

We'll start around 9:00 each day.

I've got a lift, but no adaptor (mine's mounted to the bike.) We may need a lift or two more, and adaptors.

I've got most tools we might need.  I don't have specialized stuff such as fork and swing arm wrenches.

If you're planning on servicing the rear end, you should probably have the three o-rings and thrust washer.  Taking the heckle factor and cussing into account, plan on an hour, not including saddlebag removal and re-installation.

If you're planning on servicing the petcock, a full tank of gas makes that a little harder.  You should have a new petcock cover set with you (about $27) and I'd advise a new filter screen as well.  It's about a 30 minute job.

Brake shoes don't take long, but saddlebags complicate the rear.  It's a good idea to clean the caliper pistons when the pads are changed.

New grips shouldn't present much problem, but sometimes you can't get the right side off without destroying the throttle sleeve, so if things look like they're going that way, it will have to be put off until a new throttle sleeve is available.

Some throttle locks require modification (read: grinding) to work with Kury grips.

For the start switch mod or driving light installation, please bring a 30 AMP relay.  About 5 bucks at an auto parts store in the lighting section.  Actually, if you're adding any electtrical accessory, you should add a relay too.

I'm trying to get my Interstate ready for an Iron Butt on the 23rd of Sept. and these are the maintenance items I need to get done on the 11th and 12th of Sept.

1) Rear end maintenance to include servicing the splines and checking the pinion cup and drive shaft and u-joint. (I have the 3 O-rings, Bel-Ray water proof grease, new thrust washer, and new dust seal, along with a new pinion cup, new driveshaft, and new u-joint in case I need it).

2) Changing out Brake/Clutch fluid. (I'll have the Dot 4 brake fluid).

3) Replacing air filter. (I have a new Honda air filter).

4) Changing out risers. (I have the Lamont risers).

5) Installing Pingel gas valve. (I have the Pingel CH1311 manual valve).

I will take any help with any of the above tasks.

I've got a floor jack and two adaptors.  The only prob is gettin em there.  I'd like to ride over but if needed I'll load the cage and bring all of the above.

Hey, sorry to ask so many questions, but I definately want to take advantage of having the experts around.  The bike is a 2001 with 25k miles on it.  Honday looked it over and "certified" it, but I'm not 100% sure where the bike is on it's overall maintenance.

Can you all recommend what I should absolutely get done (this wrench party or on my own) prior to putting too many more miles on it? 

Everything I planned to do at this party was mostly unnecessary.  I think I want to focus more on general maintenance so that I am starting off with a mostly clean slate.  I'm a little uneasy I dont know exactly when the last oil change was, or the air filter was replaced, or the brakes/clutch fuid was replaced.

I bought a 99 Interstate 2 months ago and the guy that I bought it from said that he didn't do any of the maintenance. He always took it to the stealership to have it worked on. That scares me. Since I didn't know when any of the maintenance was done, this is what I have done so far so that I have a baseline on maintenance.

1. Changed oil and oil filter (Mobil 1 fully synthetic)

2. Drained dragon drool tube.

3. Replaced rear gear oil (Fully synthetic)

4. Drained and replaced coolant.

I will check and service the splines and replace the 3 O-rings, thrust washer, and dust seal at the wrench party. I have a spare driveshaft, pinion cup, and u-joint in case I need them. I will also replace my air filter and handlebar risers if they get here in time from Honda DirectLine. I also need to replace my brake/clutch fluid. I also have front and rear wheel bearings if I need them. That's it for now.

At a minimum you should plan on replacing your air filter, doing an oil change, and bleeding the brakes & clutch.  Please bring your own materials and plan on hauling the old oil away.

I use Mobil 1 15W50 non-energy conserving synthetic oil.  You'll be able to tell it is non-energy conserving oil by looking at the API "donut" label on the back of the bottle.  The lower half of the outer ring of the donut should be blank.

It would be a good idea to do a rear drive line service as this is an area where it can get expensive if neglected or done improperly by a dealer (a not uncommon occurrence.)  I've got moly paste & appropriate grease for this on hand.  I might have enough rear drive oil, but it would be best to bring your own.  The manual calls for Hypoid Gear Oil 80W.  I think I'm using Amsoil 75W90 synthetic.

Other than these things, vac lines and vac plugs may need attention based on your mileage and age.  We can also check the petcock function.

BTW that makes me think of those 2 left handed (or RH) pegs I look at ever now and than.  Maybe we can work that out also, I 'll bring both with me. Where do you want to meet?
