dumping gas - is it just flooded?

I went to start up the second Valk after a few months of not running - I had taken the pipes off to try to sell them and hadn't put them back on.

Engine is trying to light but hasn't yet, and I noticed gas spurting out of what may be an air vent that runs between the carbs on either side? Have I just flooded it by keeping the choke open while trying to fire it up? Should I be worried about starting it up like this?

I just moved and don't have my service manual handy. Actually trying to start the bike up to complete the move!

Sounds more like floats stuck open from storage and they dried out.

Well, I did get it to stop dumping gas all over the engine, but she still wouldn't start, which really surprised me. I thought she would run rough, but not fail to run at all.

Clogged jets.  Time to pull the carb bank.

I was hoping to do that in the garage of my new place, not the driveway of my old place.

Well the first thing to do is get some fresh gas in the carburetors.

Carburetors, not simply the tank. Fresh gas in the tank will not work since the crappy gas would still remain in the float bowls.

If you crummed up the plugs you also might  want to replace at least half of them with clean plugs to aid in starting.

Also charge battery up to full charge or jump from a non running auto battery. These things like a lot of juice to start. They will turn over like a sewing machine but if the charge is low they won't fire.
