Tank vent?

Last wknd, I rode a couple hundred miles out and rode around for, probably, 150 miles before starting back. About 75 miles into the return trip I started running into rain. Shortly thereafter the Valk began losing power and stalled like she'd run out of gas.
After a couple of times I began cracking the gas cap periodically and got home without further engine stalling.

I just now checked the vent hose and it was not kinked or blocked.

Any insights?

Mike,

There have been a few reports of the vent tube hanging beneth the bike (near the Dragon Drool tube that comes out under the swing arm), picking up water, in heavy rain, and causing the problem you describe...

Some have shortened this tube to correct the issue.

Thanks, BD.  I'll give that a shot.
Rain is still cramping my style, here.

Check the T in the vent line to be sure that it is clear and not pressing up against something..
The T is there to break the suction, so the low end does not gather and hold water.

Does your vent tube have the "T" in line for venting ? That prevents it from sucking water !

No, it doesn't. I must have scrapped it when I discarded the crankcase vent reservoir, not knowing what it was.  The last time I got caught in any real rain it was so heavy I couldn't see and pulled off the road, so I've never missed the T.

.... so I've never missed the T

You have now.

Dumb question, but what if if you did not even connect the hose? Is it there to prevent smokers from blowing up with a nasty ole butt in their mouth @ a stop light...Should be ok for non smokers?? It's only a vent hose....

Thanks, Pete

I took the tank off before I posted the question. The hose is still on the vent and is long enough to reach the keeper on the side stand bracket.
I don't want godless smokers to explode my baby.  ;)

Do ya even need the vent line. seems alot have trouble with them getting kinked anyway. Only thing i would see is 'if' gas expanded it would run all over. I have only seen 1 valk leak in my travels. Mine never has. Just thinking out loud.  :crazy2:

Mine has never leaked but I've heard of it happening when the tank is overfilled. I've always managed to keep the tube from getting kinked, though I've seen it happen on other Valks.

Pete

Just go about half way down the hose and put a T or drill a small hole on 1 side.

I found the original vent tube with the T in it stashed in my important stuff collection.

It's also an overflow. It will drench your alternator if it overflows any while on the side stand.

Fill with cold fuel then let it sit in the sun awile and see what happens !

So if I fill my tank on the kick stand and then put in that last 0.2 gallons by standing up bike vertical and slowly filling up to the bottom of the "filler hole" or whatever that is called . . . Is some of that top off going out the vent??

Never see any on the floor and I frequently top off just before heading home and I fill close to home.
