Doin' The Devil's Triangle ...And gettin' paid for it....

You folks that have run The Devils Triangle no doubt saw all the wind mills on Buffalo Mountain ( 37 of them ) .  The company I work for owns those wind mills and is in the process of building a new high-line to feed the power into a new sub station thats also being built on The Devil's Triangle( Hwy. 116 ) .Yesterday I took a D6 bulldozer across Hwy.116 with a two axle low-boy it was very,very close in some of the curves....Tomorrow I take a 103,000 lb. Line-Cat up and its loaded on a four axle low-boy trailer    I've never been one to even think about the job after quittin' time however I'm very concerned about the move tomorrow ....I'm not sure I can make it " fit " in several of those curvers that The Devil's Triangle offers and most of them drop off in a straight down bluff

Watch out for the new culverts they have put across this road in some places the shoulder is soft.

Gravel covering the new culverts.

Not good on a heavy load.

Most of them have little orange cones designating where they cross the road.

Keep that door ajar and be ready to bail.

Saw Dad do this with a load of logs, he was hangin half out and half in but the truck laid back down

and did not go over, and he got back in.

Just sayin, it is a option.

Bailin' has crossed my mind ....The worst couple curve's  that I'm really worried about would mean if I jump I'll have about 150,000 lbs. of heavy metal coming down behind me

Just say a prayer before you start and you're covered. Works for me. I stay a lot calmer and can focus more on doing what I know how to do.

When you hit the apex of the curve... don't stop. Keep moving to keep the laws of gravity under "your" control. If you're top heavy... and if you stop on a steep "super"... you are flirting with disaster. Is this a permit load? Did the local road department clear you for this route? Cinch up the seat belt. Yrmv,

I work for the goverment we don't do permits...Seat belt is a good idea

Is that a bulldog on the front?  If so, that Mack will get you there.  Shame its not an old R model.. been in one of those with the door open , 1st and under, throttle on the floor wondering..."is it time to get out?"   

A friend of mine locally runs a body shop.  He ends up with a good number of trucks from the oilfield because so many young unexperienced drivers can't keep from hitting things.   One of the local companies has an owner that likes to keep old equipment he finds during his buyouts on the road (he has an old B model Mack that I have drove...makes you appreciate modern technology).   

That same company brought an R model Mack winch truck in this week to be repainted and cleaned up.    One of the employees my friend has, looked in the truck and was shocked to see more than one gear shift sticking up...  With the way things are going, he will probably be driving a truck next month!  Yikes!   


Drive safe!  You, I don't worry about...its the person in the four wheeler that is riding your a$$ or coming around the corner at 80 mph that scares me.

I have never hauled oversize, but know you have it under control Joe. I saw this one going down the road the other day, and thought of you.



I dont drive much anymore, but I hauled tankers on twisties for years. Nothing like hauling a 80,000 pound sloshing bomb down the road

When Hwy 40 in the Donner Pass area in California, it wasn't curvy, but going East it was steep.

That was a fun road to watch trucks on.    Some of the UN-experienced drivers used to burn up their brakes on that hill...

I remember one time, I lead a truck, should say I opened up the road for him..  

1 of my partners was at  the top stopping traffic I was headed for the bottom to shut off traffic before this guy took off down Truckee and on to da bottom.    Hwy 40 was a little narrow and kind of curvy back then...      When it became I-80, it was straightened out a whole great big bunch......

PS:  This was also back before, the current trailer brakes.  Now ya loose air and they lock up, back then you lost air, you were free wheeling.........

As a fellow heavy hauler I can feel yer pain, but I always enjoy a challenge and that line cat on that road sounds like a true challenge to me.

Update...Well it was a exciting expererience and damn sure a adrenaline rush one that I'll repeat several times over the next few month's. Worse part of it is hoping the road does'nt give way with all the weight right on the edge
