If this is true can we say good by to the big oil companies? There must be enough plastic around to sustain us for years.

I liter of oil for $1.50.

Not such a good deal when there's 3.785 liters to 1 US gallon

Oil is trading at about $87 a barrel.

A barrel is 42 gallons or 158.97 litres or $238.45 a barrel for "plastic" oil.

However a possible way of getting rid of the Atlantic and Pacific garbage patches.

Wait! Isn't plastic made from oil? Why can't they just make engines that will run on plastic?

A bloody big chunk From 1 April 2009 the main road fuel (petrol and diesel) duty rate is £0.5419 per litre. In addition to which VAT is added at the rate of 15%, to the total price of the fuel including the added duty.

Fuel duty raised £23.3 billion for the treasury in 2004-5.

Why do you think the tax is to pay for 'free entitlements', as opposed to paying for the true costs of automobile ownership?

Just wondering where you got this 'fact'?

Wayne, really, relax, I asked a question, I wasn't even remotely implying that I was stating a fact. Hence the question mark.

As a person that has worked in the oil patch.... and retired afer 36 years in the patch....  I see the embargo for drilling... and the release of the embargo... then the failure to a allow permits to drill after the embargo.... which is the same thing as the embargo....... is this sounding rebundant??????? as a plan for domestic production to fail.....
Fuel prices will go up...... people will scream...... government will say " this is not right"  and nationalize the oil patch like they did the auto industry....  then you can expect  $5+ a gallon gas prices.....  hopefully this will not happen... but it is what I believe was part of the plan.......Hopefully we have awakened....

The way I read it is that you get 1 liter of oil worth $1.50 that only costs you 20 cents worth of electricty to recover it.

i didn't see it in the video, but, what's left over in the canister??  you're not making 100% oil from the plastics, there's got to be some waste left behind shouldn't there???

It depends on the source of heat or electricity doesnt it?

If you were using flowing water from a small dam or stream, or a solar furnace (mirrors focused on an oven) or a small wind turbine, you probably could say the cost was zero plus recovery of the fixed cost of the small plant to make the electricity plus the amortized cost of the machine

Does anyone else see a domestic growth industry.

That was my first thought as well.  My gut feeling is that the energy usage is higher than the recovered energy value.  Or nearly so.

Where are all the capitalists on this board?  This guy has a great idea with huge potential.  If it is successful, markets will bring the cost down down down.

I think Alph and Oss are thinkin correctly on this one.  Also, it likely wouldn't hurt the oil industry.  My guess is they will jump on it and make it a subsidiary.  After all, you have to make plastic from oil to convert it back into oil from plastic.

I would like to see the leftovers, too.

From what I can see, this machine is simply a still.  He is heating petro-plastics until the light oils boil out and are condensed in the water bath.  He is basically breaking and reversing the catalyst that bonded the propylene and ethylene polymers.  The solids residue would be a lot more than the oil produced.  The oil would be low BTU fuel, much like alcohol, but with more pollutants since it has chlorides.

I'm not an investment advisor, but you won't see me buying stock!

I think that the worlds governments are very worried about our dwindling oil supplys and they are not letting us in on the picture.

in the not too distant future,$1.50 a liter for oil may not seem a bad price.Wake up to the fact that the west is loosing its dominance, add another 2.5 billion chinese and Indian consumers into the maths and Earths resources run out even faster.
