Authorities say a critically injured motorcyclist from Tempe was traveling 157 mph moments before he hit a pole in the San Tan Valley area.

The motorcyclist whizzed past a Pinal County sheriff's deputy at 2:05 a.m. Sunday while driving north on Gantzel Road near Pecan Creek Drive, according to a Sheriff's Office statement. The posted speed limit is 45 mph.

Tim Gaffney, a Sheriff's Office spokesman, said Tuesday that the deputy didn't have time to initiate a pursuit: The motorcyclist was quickly out of sight. By the time the deputy caught up with him, the motorcycle had crashed into a traffic light pole about four miles away.

Authorities identified the driver as 19-year-old Noe Calazo, of Tempe. Calazo was flown to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center in extremely critical condition.

Crash investigators say Calazo lost control of the motorcycle, a 2004 Yamaha YFR, at a gradual turn in the roadway.

The motorcycle traveled nearly 350 feet through the dirt shoulder before colliding with the concrete base of a traffic light, launching Calazo 104 feet away and the motorcycle 18 feet into a nearby power pole, the sheriff's statement said.

The Sheriff's Office said Calazo was driving without a license; it was previously revoked. He now faces charges of aggravated DUI, reckless driving and criminal speed.

How fast could he go if not critically injured?

I know I could easily have been that kind of statistic. That is why I consciously chose to stick with old and slow bikes (Harley's ) 'till the 1st ride on a Valk :cooldude:. I EARNED the name RoadKill,it would have been sooner and I probably would not be bothering ya'all if I had not chosen to stay away from those 157+ mph machines at a young age.

I was 17yrs old when I rode my 1st 750cc Ninja.Fast as hell then, (SLOW by today's standards) and I saw the writing on the wall, Jail OR dead !  Some one told me speed cost money and I told him it could cost alot more than that! I hope that rider lives and learns...if not,I'm glad he aint on the street my mom drives on. :-\

Looks like he was on an R1.  Any of those liter sport bikes will go 150+ in a matter of seconds.

The math doesn't look for this guy, provided he survives (Revoked license + DUI + 157MPH).

no one said you had to be smart to do stupid things.  i'm sure once he's all recouped, he'll find a bottle of curage somewhere, and do it again.....

You cannot fix stupid, but there is a fix for terminally stupid - he may have found it.

For his families sake I hope he recovers and never rides or drinks again.
Cause it is apparent, he cannot handle either.

I do believe that most sport bikes (YZR, Ninja, GSXR, etc.) all have extordinary brakes and are known for their handing prowess.

Yep,...157 MPH, DUI, revoked license all add up to STUPID!
For sure,...you can't fix stupid.

My nephew (26 yrs old) got a ticket last summer; he was clocked at 154 (on his hopped-up Daytona 675).
The cop wrote him up for 90 MPH in a 70 MPH zone. That put the Kabosh on his speeding for a while at least.
And for a youngster, he is smart enough to know that alcohol and driving don't mix, cause speed is a big enough of a high.

ALWAYS QUESTION AUTHORITY!

I read an update yesterday that said he is alive, still very critical, but alive...
