You can call me Hank...

             YOU CAN CALL ME HANK

First off, let me state rather emphatically that I ain't tryin' to ignite no political-correctness firestorm here, nor do I mean to appear insensitive, intolerant or any such thing. OK? Fact is, I hold with the proposition that imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery. For example, I've already learned from our Hispanic cousins about a couple of concepts I've adopted into my own way of thinkin' and behavin'... Siestas... Manana... Margaritas...

I'm often asked why I decided to buy a house in the Montgomery, Alabama area. For starters, I wasn't really anxious to buy a place anywhere at the time, but the housing market was such that I just figured it was probably the best time to buy a house then than it would be in the next several years, perhaps even the next decade... I selected this area for several reasons. For example, nobody 'round these parts spoke with an accent like they do in other parts of the country, so there were no language issues for me to contend with.

Grits are very abundant here as is sweet tea. Heck you can even buy ready-made sweet tea by the gallon nowadays from the grocery store and most convenience stores. Most of the gals here 'bouts know how to make cornbread, corn muffins, biscuits, collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, fried tomatoes, okra (fried and boiled), and they're real handy with a skillet. They also understand that most vegetables including greens, peas, and beans have to be flavor-enhanced with ham or bacon.

Another reason is I'm within a day's ride on my Valk from here to more of my friends than anywhere else I could've located, and I'm also within a day's ride of nearly all my kin folks, including my daughter and grand kids. OK, there's one more reason... This is where I just happened to be when I met a very nice, single, lady real estate person. Alas, I did get a pretty good deal on the house, but that was it... At any rate, I'm here now.

Aside from the aforementioned reasons, there also are some additional benefits to my choice... Alabama is rich in history, for example, and I've been interested in history all my life. A long and rich history of native occupancy, plus the Spanish were here, as were the French. The English, of course, and then us Americans... That latter group had a lot of history familiar to most folks in our culture today.

Slavery was abundantly employed here, yet the drama and triumphs of the Civil Rights movement were also experienced to a large extent here, too. A couple of blocks from the capital building where Jefferson Davis was sworn in as the President of The Confederacy, Rosa Parks 'made her famous statement' about the injustice of the legacy of slavery: Jim Crowe laws and segregation. The KKK was bankrupted in a lawsuit here brought by a local lawyer in a court room only a few blocks from where a former editor of the Montgomery Advertiser had lived when he penned a series of editorials attacking the Klan and its egregious practices that earned him a Pulitzer Prize... and that ain't all...

Hank Williams of country music fame was born and raised not far from here, he also lived here for a time, and he's buried at an old cemetery in downtown Montgomery... within a mile of the Hank Williams museum. I visited both recently... and that's when it struck me... Our cousins of the Muslin persuasion have this faith-feature about those who go to Mecca and do what they're supposed to there, they can then take on the name of the Prophet Mohammad... like Mohammad Ali did, for example. Well... I've decided to adopt that feature myself in a modified way... So, you can now call me Hank...

I'm at present also ponderin' on another variant aspect of an Islamic Faith tenant... how to get all those virgins in the next life without having to die a martyr's death in this one... I ain't got that worked out so far, but... I do find it an intriguing concept... Wish ol' Hank luck?

John,

Yer in luck, amigo!!! The lady next door to me just put her house on the market a couple of days ago!!! Come on up and be my neighbor... (I don't think I had anything to do with her decision, though). I got me one of those local gals fer a girl friend, and she's a pretty darned good cook. She's from around here, too, Prattville born and raised, as a matter of fact, which is just down the road about 15 miles or so. Tell Rita y'all can dine with us and she won't even have to cook... unless she wants to learn, of course...

Yeah, I imagine we will see ya out yonder some this year. Napper likes to ride, and so do I, as yu already know... We'll be lookin' for ya.

Jeff & RJ,

I forgot to mention that after I posted this, Napper called me and added yet another dimension to the theme of virgins... Why would I want all them virgins anyhow... wouldn't I prefer a gal with experience? She does make a good point... Hmmmm, I think maybe she was volunteerin' to be that one, too.
