I still haven't bought a new mattress yet.....may use some of my tax refund to get one soon.....

Not sure if I should go with a traditional mattress system or pay more $$ for one of the air type ones..... .....

There's another air bed company called Comfortaire ® Direct that supposedly was in business first with prices a little cheaper than Select Comfort but you can't try them out in a showroom like you can with the Select Comfort ones...both are twice as expensive as a regular bed system.....

There's a place in Atlanta called the Original Mattress Factory that has two-sided mattresses for around $600 for the Regency Firm that I think I'd like...they make their own mattresses

I  guess I need to go lay on both and see how they feel and stack up to one another....I know we spend a lot of time sleeping and shouldn't skimp on something because of price, I just have to see for myself if air is worth twice the price??.....

Since I wear a CPAP, I can't really sleep on my stomach anymore like I used to...that's why I always needed a firm mattress to keep from bending my back in the middle.....guess it's time to do a little hands on research.....

just bought a "temperpedic" style mattress. different brand. it's cooler than a temperpedic(air holes throughout) cheaper (but not by much), 20 year warranty. i like it.

buddy bought a sleep number, after some :adjustment" he really like his.

try to find a motel that has sleep number beds(there are some) try it for a night or two.

kinda like seats everbody's  body is different

IMO Air Mattresses are nice, but a novelty like water beds and not nearly as good as a firm or super firm double sided mattress (you probably know to steer clear of the comfort pillow top one sided mattresses since you are paying too much for just half a mattress that won't last).

I think you would be wise to focus on this place (we have them up here as well)...... or any reputable double sided extra firm mattress..... (Sealy, Simmons etc).

I have read reviews that say moisture forms in the air chamber and bleeds through the mattress causing breathing problems.....that is a definite concern.....I'm kinda leaning towards the traditional ones....and plush top mattresses are OUT....I sleep in almost the buff because I hate to be too hot laying there trying to go to sleep....probably going to be a firm type cover for me.....and I guess 600 coils is better than 336??....

It matters more if the coils are tied together or individually free. The tied together ones are cheaper to buy, but can not let your body conform, and movement in one spot spreads all over. I went with a Tempurpedic this last time and like it a lot mainly because it lets my sore, old hips not hurt in the morning. I don't think it's as good for my back. It used to take me a few minutes to stand up after laying down, now I can hop out of bed and walk right away (handy for the bathroom).

we've had a select comfort for 10 years now..as far as firmness.. i can make it as firm or soft as i want..
What steered me towards select comfort..well i'll tell ya.
after sleeping on regular matresses for a long time there is one problem with them..yes even the double pillow tops have a problem..you CANNOT change them to fit your back.. they are what they are..
Now with the select comfort..my back changes from night to night as far as getting comfortable enough to sleep.. i find some nights my back feels better on a soft matress and other nights only a firm one will take my back pain away. take your choice but in my opinion. you can't beat a matress that can and will change as your body changes..

I DO sleep alone.....the Boss and I have separate bedrooms....because I used to snore loudly(according to Smokin Joe/Coot and others who have shared rooms on motorcycle trips)....and also because I HATE to be hot when I sleep...I sleep in the underwear under only a comforter in the winter and a light sheet in the summer.....the Wife has to have blankets and sheets out the wazoo!!...I don't like having an arm or leg thrown over me in the middle of the night when I'm sleeping....

CPAP took care of the snoring......after I "take care of business", it's off to separate corners...wouldn't have it any other way!!..... .......and she already got her a new mattress a year or so ago....

Select Comfort still allows a test period with the mattress, no need to go find a motel that has one!

I've had mine for about 5 years, and t's doing great.  I keep my side much firmer than Wizard keeps his, so I sometimes feel like I'm falling if I roll too far to his side.  

I've had good "traditional" mattresses, but the springs always gave it up too soon.  The Sleep Number bed is guaranteed for much longer than the traditional beds.

It took a while to get used to, but it's worth it.

Oh, and I sleep (in the winter) under a light quilt or two, while Wizard has two heavy comforters on his side.  And in summer, I have a sheet and he has his own sheet plus the quilt.  It works out well for us.  Separate bedrooms aren't necessary just because one likes it warmer or cooler than the other.

We got one of them pillow top ones, paid $1k for it 10 yrs ago and is good. Put one of them egg crates things on it and its good to go. I like mine firm also.

We have tried both the air matress and the foam matress. I think the air matress sleeps better than anything I have ever slept on before. The foam is good, but my fat ass sinks down so far into the foam, I can't move around. But the air mattress is no good for anything other than sleeping on, if you know what I mean. I had a Select Comfort before my Tempur-Pedic.  I like the foam better. 

But nothing seems to be perfect.

I liked the "Novelty" of a water bed.  But the wife and I could not agree on a temperature.  I froze her to death or she roasted me to death.

The foam seems to be the best so far, but like most beds, I am limited to about 6 hours before my back starts hurting.

Now... I have a big walk-in closet.  In that closet, I have two single mattresses stacked up.  Sometimes... I go in there either when the wife is still watching TV, or in the morning if I want to try to sleep a little extra. Having 2 different beds seems to help my back not hurt when I get up.

So there... I am now in, er uh... out of the closet!

I tried the air matress a couple of years ago...had it for three weeks...could not sleep on it...lots of money for an air matress...last year bit the bullet and bought the Tempur-Paedic and have been sleeping like a rock. They are pricey, I will not even try to argue that...but I have tried them and for me it was worth the money.

Best of luck and rest well...Beds are like oil, tires and seats...

Ditto to all these observations. 10 yrs with a select comfort and would buy another.

Had a Sterns and Foster pillowtop for 15 years, then got a Tempurpedic, the softest one they had, this last October. After 45 days of waking up feeling like someone had beat me with a bat, we sent it back and got a Sleep to Live mattress after doing the diagnostics test they have at Mattress Firm.  Sleeping good now.  20 year warranty.  Not cheap, but not as much as the Tempurpedic.

+1  I bought a Tempurpedic after a car accident that "killed" my lower back (L5-S1) I like it alot it probably helped me prolong the scheduling of my spinal fusion surgery.  With that done and recovered by 6 years I still love the mattress as does my wife! (BTW for the curious ones,, got T boned by a crown vic taxi cab)

I am a notorious bed sweater.  I don't think the tempur pedic is particularly hot. It actually sucks the heat OUT of you when you first get into it.  I like that part.  It gets softer as it warms up, but I don't find it objectionable.  I am 6'-2" and 335 lbs.  (And hopefully shrinking a little)
