yes.  you can...as long as you get a male to male audio cable.  You can set the volume level on the ipod to a medium level then adjust the volume via the bike radio.

The AUX input is under the right sidecover.

Follow Joe's advice.  I did mine that way and it works great.

You can get the male to male cable just about anywhere.  Mine is 6' long, so I coiled up the excess and wire tied it under the right side cover.

You won't always find the Aux jack behind the right side cover.  Many years ago when I was looking for mine I almost went crazy...it wasn't there!   Mine was hanging down in front of the battery.  So here is the easiest way to find it.

The radio unit sits on top of the battery.  There are 2 rows of wires coming out the front.  The Aux wire will be in the center of the top row and be a smaller diameter than the others.  Gently pull up on this wire as you look behind the side cover to see any movement.  It may be like mine was and pull right up and out.

Since this thread answered some of my questions already, I thought it would be best to resurrect it.


1) If the volume can be controled by the radio, since I use the AVC to automaticaly increase the volume, would this feature still work under the AUX setting while using the MP3 player?

2) I take it that only the volume can be controlled, nothing else from the pod on the handlebars, and that the MP3 player would have to be controlled directly?

I have nooticed when I used the amb on my IS with an IPOD it would make some wierd noises turn it off and they go away do not the the Volume control messed with it!!

I have had no issues with AMB and AVC using the AUX Input.  I used it with my iPod for about a year, now I use it with XM Radio through my Garmin Zumo 550. 

Depending on your mp3, you may be able to get a remote controller to give you full functionality.  I got the iJet Remote for my iPod and mounted it on the handlebar.  I ran the wires (opwer and M-M Audio) into the trunk, where my iPod is safe from rain and "sticky fingers".  I left the wiring in-place when I set-up the XM, so now if I want to switch back to the iPod I just pull the side cover and swap the cables into the AUX Input jack.

I know this topic is old, but I gotta say...thank God its here cuz it's a timeless question for those who acquire a Valk much later than the thread. I'm preparing for an 8K trip on my 99 and I just discovered the aux port thanks to this thread! I'm so psyched and grateful as this will make the trip soooo much better in radio void areas! Now all I have to do is determine how to hook up satelliete radio and I'm in like flint! Thanks to all!
