Dampers

I know I should get the dampers from Gary but cant wait as I do my stuff in March. So that said I looked up HDL and found the dampers. There is also a insert looking pc priced separate. Can I just get the dampers and use my old inserts or is it better to get new 'spacers'? I assume thats what is pictured. If so how do you get the old spacers out to reuse them?
Dampers were good last year but now at 70k+ its a cheap part to replace.

On newer model Valkyries the rubber part and the aluminum part are made together, and it
is around the same price as just the rubber part for the older Valkyries...

I have just reused the aluminum parts when I changed out the rubber parts...

Not sure this year. I had the wheel off last year and when twisted the flange in the dampers there was maybe 1/16- 1/8 max of play, if I remember correctly. Could have just been the rubber.

Fudgie i just bought Dampers from Ron Ayers and took Smokin Joe's advice and ordered them to fit an Interstate and they come with the inserts already in them and i have a Standard.

I bought mine from Gary end of Sept. He had one set left, he mentioned where seconds. He wasn't going to make anymore on spec. I would say right now, he's out. I'm keeping mine for my next bike, as I didn't get them into my IS before the accident.

I would think he would make up a batch if they where all pre-sold, but I wouldn't know how many that would be, or when. We'll need to wait to hear from Gary, I don't want to put words in his mouth, just hoping.

Oh, yes, and when I removed my rear wheel from my IS at 50K miles, the stock dampers where loose in their seats, so it was a good thing I had them. Also all the shock bushings where shot, and I would have replaced them also. Gary does have shock bushings still.

Hummm, maybe I should pick up another while they are available. After all, I'll have a spare rim to swap out when I need a new tire, everything needs to be good in them both.

I'll email Gary and order another set for when ever he's doing it.

Last I heard, his last run was last year and it was the last of it. If he's taking orders, I'm in for two sets.

i sent gary an email last month and asked if he was still making them, and he said if he could get ten people interested in some, he'd make some.  give him an email and get on his list, i do believe he is making some and they'll be ready on the 22nd of march.

Is it worth the cost difference from $80 and Ron Ayres at $32.61?

I need to replace mine also (70,000 miles) and will be pulling the rear wheel soon for spline maint.

Gary's dampers are polyurethane and don't wear out like the rubber ones..all high performance suspension bushings for cars/trucks are made from the same thing, and are far superior..

That's the thread, and it answers most of the questions.
While I appreciate those who have expressed interest here in a thread, the way I am tracking those who'd like a set is to receive an e-mail from them (you) and I will send out a mass e-mail when they are ready. You need not pay until then. It is $85 shipped.

One more thing: The OE dampers with separate aluminum centers are very old, and kind of left over from the 1500 GW. You don't want those. One of my improvements to the dampers was to bond the polyurethane damping material to the aluminum center. They last a lot longer that way. Honda might have seen the light in my method and maybe that's why they now bond theirs, too.

He carries EOM parts for the Honda.  It states that on his website.

If ya order from him, ya get what ya pay for, EOM.......  Sorry to burst ur bubble.

Go with Gary's and in the long run you will save lots of replacement $$$$ on the damper bushings.  They last at least 4 or 5 times longer.    I forgot how many miles ago that I put em in, and they is still as good as new.   I know it has been over 60K.

If you aren't familiar with polyurethane, that's the material used for skateboard wheels. Polyurethane has the highest rebound factor for durability and memory, ability to return to it's original shape, of any affordable plastic this side of NASA while having a high durometer hardness rating, able to support weight, not easily distorted, etc. Any time you see plastic (rubber-esque) wheels on pallet jacks, odds are the wheels are polyurethane. Polyurethane is even use for non-marring fork-lift wheels and you know the load those wheels are subjected to. It actually might be overkill for dampers.
