On Memorial Day weekend three riders (one Interstate, two Harleys) will leave Wausau, WI to turn 1000mi in 24 hours and then return on the next day to Wausau for over 1500 in less than 48. My Interstate needs company. Anyone in the area interested?

The route is Wausau to Madison to Dubuque to Omaha to north of Fargo the first day. Then Fargo to Wausau via Minneapolis/St. Paul.

I'm glad to see someone from Wisconsin doing an Iron Butt run .. on a Valk no less.  I would love to go with, but I can't plan for it at this point... work is to uncertain right now.

Being from Wausau, you do know it's possible it could snow?  :D

Even if I can't go, I'll be there in spirit.  An iron butt run is on my bucket list.

Make sure you post pictures after!

Guess I'll never understand  :-\  Seems like a nice 300 miler through the mountain twisties would be so much more fun and enjoyable....Get on the blue road and run like hell for 500 miles turn around and run the blue road home another 500 miles  ???

I've seen alot of people that thought they were cool , but then again Lord I've seen alot of fools.

If you do the entire 1500 miles within 36 hours, you can earn both a Saddle Sore 1000 (1000mi in 24h) and a Bun Burner 1500 (1500mi in 36h).

I have done a SS1000 (around Lakes Erie & Ontario) and a Bun Burner Gold (1500mi in 24 hours). Planning two this year. One, 1000 miles around Lake Superior the Monday before Inzane and then in early September a 1000 miler around Lake Huron. That leaves Lake Michigan and I will have all the Great Lakes. Then a Great Lakes run around all 5 Great Lakes within 100 hours...probably in 2012.

I can't answer why I find these rides enjoyable... it certainly isn't for a certificate. I think as I get older it just tells me I still have enough "get up and go" to do it. I have a nephew who likes to do them with me... the first one he did on a Hayabusa, the second on an M109R. I think a lot of the fun comes from the planning and execution of the ride, not just the ride itself.

We try to avoid just a run down the superslab and back. Try to integrate interesting highway routes and routes that describe something... "we went around...", "we rode all the way across...".

Both kinds of Valks make for a great bike to accomplish one of these types of rides.

Lower Lakes 1000 - 07/07 & 09/10 * Bun Burner GOLD - 09/10
Lake Superior 1000 - 07/11 * Lake Michigan 1000 - 09/11 * Lake Huron 1000 - 09/11
Saddlesore 2000 - 09/11 * Ohio 1000 - 07/13

1000 miles...1500, what ever. You own a Valk ! Nothing to prove after that. Now we just do it because it's nice to see the country   :cooldude:

IMO every rider should attempt an Iron Butt ride. . .  I don't know if the analogy is a good one, but it's the same reason people climb mountains I suppose.  Not just because "it's there" but because of the challenge of it and feeling of accomplishment when you finish it.  And, along the way you almost for certain will have some type of unplanned for 'thrill' to deal with. We had several, including an unexpected blinding rainstorm that was so strong it forced trucks off the road and my buddy on a Wing losing his headlights in heavy semi-traffic coming out of Indy at 0-dark-30.

I would love to do the 1500 mile ride, but both my close buddies with bikes have moved to distant lands. . .  If anyone in Michigan is planning one this summer and needs another rider, please send me a note.

Thanks for the words of advice and support. If anyone changes their mind I'd still like another Valk along. LIstening to those damn pipes on the Harleys forces me to ride either far ahead or far behind, Can't hear the music of the purring lion underneath me.

I'll be happy if I get my "aluminum" butt 350 miles to Franklin,W.V with only fuel stops after 13 years of not riding, then the 400 to InZane !!! I've done 500 milers, but I was just a little younger/limber/energetic,etc. !!!!  without a speed limit and chance of tickets, not a problem.
I actually think I can ride more comfortable/less stiff/more awake than driving.

good luck

I didn't know there was any HD riders that ride that far......besides me! :2funny: :2funny:

I have done about 4 different 800-900 days on my harley. I've done several 1000 milers on Valkries.
