As if i needed a better excuse after this. And yes proper pressures were/are maintained. Old2soon welcome to the darkside. And if i don't get my frappin cookie-i'll have to go out and buy my own!! :tickedoff: :uglystupid2: :2funny: ;D

I seriously cant imagine what you guys are doing to those E-3 tires.......I have 19K and change on the one im riding on now, and its going to make the trip to Daytona before I put the new one on.....last one got just over 23K.

The snake, Deals gap, Cheaha mountain heavy rain on the BRP no complaints here.....I guess its the old YMMV thing

I'd guess it was not the REAL tire pressure they needed to run.

If the pressure they used was less than 45, Dunfloper's will cup and be toast in short order.

OK, flame suit on, so ya'll can tell me I don't know what the 'F' I'm talking about.  I'd venture to say I've wore out more rear tires then the normal user.  Been on CT's & Bike tires.

No RJ no flame suit needed with me. I look at all of this as constructive critisism. I try really hard to not take it personally. I was only 2 or 3 p s i lower than what you stated(slime digital pressure gauge)Yes=ive read more than 1 post with way better mileage life than i've gotten. But after doing the research-d/s is in my future. When i go to the tech board-i'm just looking for answers or trying to clarify a situation. If i thought i was going to not get opposing views-and i do expect those-well aint this what this board is all about. Just the short time i've been on it i've learned a lot more about these fantastic machines we are priviliged to own and ride. I constantly try to thank everyone for their input and experience. Sides a little spirited conversation gets the blood apumpin. As always RISE SAFE

Same here, I have about 13,000 and they still look great.  Never had a tire last this long w/o cupping.  Evey Metzler I ever ran did that.

Bill S

19K on the first set of E3's. Got 16K on second set and gonna get a few more out if it. Run 38-40PSI

matt

well I have dunlop and do not like it ran 43psi tire cupping rear bad with only 5,000 on it. was hoping to make inzane with it but i do not think so.  I am in car/truck tire repair had my tire rep look at it he thinks I got a second- tough thing is seconds are only supposed to have marks that do not affect performance

Went Darkside  on one Valk back in July after having a flat at 85 on I44. I put a thousand miles on it and was convinced within 2 months the other Valk had one to. Really can not see myself going back.

just a thought the throw out there.

could it be the different makeup of the roads we ride?

been in several different states, and they all seem to make their roads differently.

some VERY smooth,  some VERY rough, some black, some brown, etc.

I've never had (never will have) a rear E3. Tried one on the front (Darkside rear)
but took it off while it still had almost 1/2 tread left. My Metzeler 880 stuck better
in the rain than the E3 did on dry pavement. Tried several air pressures but never
did get it to feel comfortable. My first (only?) Avon front is toast now, going back
to Metz in a week or so. The Avon is ok but nothing special...and not as good in
the wet as the Metz, IMHO. Rear GYTT has 21,000 and many more to go!!!

Ya i got to heavy a right hand. I'll be sittin in front of the computer fri or sat and depleting the checking account. The fact that this i/s will pull the front up w/o DUMPING the clutch is source of amusment for my buds on their h/d-ya i got a chuckle also. Thanks everyone for the input and as always RIDE SAFE.

i've got 5000 on my rear dunlop E-3 and about 6000 on the front.  don't have an issue with either.  now grant it, i haven't been riding as much as some older riders, but i don't like the feel of the car tire.  so, it's my money, i'm buying another cycle tire when that day comes.  i do believe that anyone that says they check their tire presure every single time they ride and they were only able to get "x" amount of miles, is lying.  i check my presure about once a month, sometimes i have to add 5 #'s.  i do believe that those that preach gloom and doom on any one particular brand is a person that didn't maintain that particular brand.  i like the way a cycle tire "rolls" through the turns and doesn't "flopp" over into a turn, or "pop" you up when you exit a turn.  if there's a "rounded" sidewall car tire out there, then i'll switch to it.  until then, i'm riding my dunlops.....

18,000 on my E3's. This is my 2nd set and got 18K on the first set also. The set on there now went from KY to Alaska and back and then another 8K so it has seen some rough roads.

how are u calibrating your gages, if at all?
does your gage compensate for temp, humidity or altitude?
do u actually have 42psi or is it actually 37psi, or is that 45psi really 50psi? over inflation will wear out a tire just as fast as under-inflated.
using a pencil gage?,  highly inaccurate.

I only use a gage that has the following which will provide the most consistant accurancy as long as I do it at the same tire temp each time;
Quality bronze Bourdon Tube gauge design ensures accuracy is not affected by changes in ambient temperature, humidity or altitude, not tire temps.
Fully geared, solid brass precision movement.

using the above pressure gage
the oem dunlops provided 13k miles to the wear bars, oem balance weights.
metzler provided 13670 miles rear and 15573 miles front to the wear bars, added dyna beads mid-life.
this involves a lot of stop/go work traffic every day.

Have run E3's on my I/S, I install new tires after 14-15k miles, even if they are not at the wear bars. Never had an issue  with cupping at any stage of wear. 40-41LBS.

If you are riding  and it is a must that you keep your eyes on the road, you are riding too fast.

WOW!!  My rear Metzler with stick on weights lasted 14K miles and my front approximately 20K miles without having some super duper gauge.  I used an Accu Gauge that I got at the parts store.

Just curious have you pulled the rear wheel to check the final drive ?   17,000 miles and a good year to go ....I'm aware you did'nt ask for my opinion however if you have'nt my suggestion would be to do it now.

I just can't see those folks claiming more than 12k miles on ANY MC tire.... and that would be for a front only.   How are you riding that many miles on a tire????  Where you riding all highway with no twisties?

I had one set of E3's with 40psi each and they were the hardest riding tire I had.... both wore out about 7 - 8k.

Going to see how Metzlers work out on the Valk.... with Ride-On in em.

What the heck happened to this tire below?

I bought my 99 IS last April with E3s on it, a few thousand miles according to the PO. I put 15,000 miles on them, and they weren't quite on the wear bars. If I ever go back to a MC tire on the rear, I would consider an E3 (went Dark Side, can't see going back after about a thousand miles).

The front gave me the same mileage, but it wobbled at mid and hi speeds. I could never take both hands off the bars without wobble and risk of tank slapping. With a D404 bias rear on the front I rode 5 KM at 70 MPH without touching the bars. Not a regular thing to do, just checking alignment and balance. I will never put a Dunlop on the front of this bike again, ever.

Now that-there's funny!!

On a side note, it doesn't hurt to check your guage against another one. I've used the same digital guage for a few years, in the Jeep and truck. Always thought it was accurate, and never had any wear problems on either of them. However, when I went darkside, I was playing quite a bit with the pressures, and the Valk still seemed a little squirrely. I checked it against two other gauges, and found it was about 8 lbs on the low side!! So, my 40 lbs was actually about 32. Once I bumped up the pressure, the squirrels left the building! So did the other gauge...
