Why can't you get rid of the small blow back box behind the ignition when removing everything else during a desmog?

if you are talking about the vaccum storage container with the three hoses, the top hose of which goes to the bottom of the air box, then no...you need this. don't take it off. if this is not what you are talking about, then i'm lost too.

Why would you not be able to take it off, if it is park of the vacuum? Just because it's attached to the air box, why would a box that goes nowhere (one it's desmoged) be an issue?
I just discovered this "box" when I removed the engine as part of the wrecking of my CA IS.

I think this is to keep oil out of the airbox.

You'll need to plug the hole in the air box to maintain the integrity of the system!

if you plug it off you will over pressure the crankcase and have oil coming out of bad places!!!!!!!!

You need to leave the little black oil seperator "box" as is. It keeps crankcase fumes from getting into the airbox. When you do a de-smog there is a nipple on the bottom of the air box that needs to be capped off. It is about 1/2" or so & will allow unfiltered air into the carbs & possibly cause a lean condition as well. I use a vinyl cap & silicone it on.

If the black box is an oil catch, then could we not still remove this and replace it with something smaller and less attrusive.
I'm thinking of a gas filter (one of those cheap inline plastice type), maybe with the filter removed. You would need to downsize the air lines from the large size to a fuel line size.

I don't think that a smaller filter box & lines would be a good idea. Honda made it that size to provide adequate breathing for the crankcase. Shrink it too much & things may start leaking like an old Harley!
