I have a 1998 that the crossmember that the kick stand bracket bolts to is bent and damaged because the bracket will hit on speed bumps and the last time on the pavement going around a sharp left turn. Any ideas on a good fix, anyone else having this problem.

bigbf's site with his own fix is really quite extraordinary.......after you look at his finished product, and then compare it to the stock set-up, the first thing that comes to your mind is: whoa.....this is a whole lot better than what came on the bike.

Yupper. Had Big BF repair my Cross member about 3 years ago. Rivco Centerstand bent mine. If you can get the Bike to Arizona he is the one to have do the repair ........

Shortly after picking up my bike I got the feeling that it was standing to upright on the side stand. I am sensitive to this because I had my HD blow over in a thunderstorm. When I got it home I took it to Honda for state inspection.+,+. I had them l :)k at the stand after two looks and a new stand they dicovered the brace was bent. They had no idea of how to replace the brace. There solution was to heat the stand and bend it. It still wasn't over as far as I liked, so I went internet browsing. I saw some guys thought the normal position was to far over, but I found a couple guys reporting bent brackets like mine. Curbs and big pot holes were blamed. My search lead me to BigBF's web site,WOW. He has a step by step photo essay on replacing the brace http://bigbf.com/bigbf_shop/crossmember_damaged/He will for $40.00 sell you a prefabs brace. Just got my bike back from my mechanic yesterday. My Valkyrie sits the way it was designed. YEA!! A big thanks to Big Bill F |

Has anyone with bent cross member dealt with insurance company and Honda dealers for fix? Have a 1998 Standard with pretty severe bend, the kickstand bending was able to help very little. Appreciate any replies

I would imagine it is to maintain frame alignment and demensional integrity so the swing arm fits back in when the new crossmember is welded in place. |

I had the problem with mine several years ago. I also looked at big bf site but being out of work didnt have cash to fix. I fixed it myself and has been holding up well. I went to home depot and bought 2 inch steel with 1/4 inch lip on each side. I cut the old bar off. You will be surprised how thin it is. On each side of the frame is a solid nub. I cut the steel long enough so it goes over top and another for bottom. The 1/4 inch sides are touching from the top and bottom piece. You will have to do some shaping on the ends for a good fit. If you have acess to welder you could weld the two pieces together. I used two u clamps and tightened them down and double nutted them over the nubs. When you drill two holes for kickstand bracket drill through both and nut and bolt it on. This will also hold assembly together. This also gave me a nice flat place to mount my stebel horn. You will have to experiment with location for bracket before drilling holes. I also painted black for protection. Mine has been on for over three years and hasnt budged.I havent hit it on anything ethier as I have been more carefull over bumps. I also dont sit on my bike while on kickstand without weight on my feet only because I am big and fat and dont want to take any chances.
