I am wanting to add a speaker system to my std to play the iPod while riding.  Any experiences or personal recommendations?
How much fun can I have before I have to go to hell?

I like this set up....I keep the mp3 player on me and plug-in.....nothing on the handlebars or on the bike to steal

Can get the same set up from J&P cycles.....see the amp is mounted under the triple tree and the speakers on the shield mounts......they are almost invisible, and when you do see them they look klike they belong.......incredible sound for the size

Great topic.
I guess you will have to ask yourself what are wanting-expecting from your stereo.
-Good ear phones work great with an external volume switch, but me being in California we are only allowed to use a ear plug- no head phones.
-Sound level at cruising speeds, your exhaust noise and speeds about 65mph have a huge effect on speakers.
- passengers, bet give them head phones cause no matter its never going to be loud enough for them.
-helmet, full face or half helmet.

I run a HD street glide fairing with the Poly-Planar MP3-Kit3 kit designed for marine use (boats), but it required me to make my own speaker enclosures. SO I ran an 3.5 inch water proof speaker mounted to the support brackets the past 2 years. Which was fine to about 60mph.

But I want more sound So I am working on my fiberglass skills and I am about done with inner fairing with speakers.

What ever you run, make sure you have a quick way to lower the volume, whether to talk or shut it off when you come to a stop.

I will post a full write up as I complete the HD fairing with my custom speaker enclosures... mounted to my valkyrie.

I'd recommend helmet speakers as there's a 99.9% no one within ear shot will share your passion for the type of music you enjoy or it's volume.

I have a 4 speaker system from motorcycletunes.com and have been happy with it ever since I bought it. I have Two 4 inch speakers that mount to the Handlebars and have Two 5 1/2 inch speakers that mount to the Crash Bars. I also have a Pyle 1000 Watt Marine Amp pushing it all that fits under the seat. I just hook my Zune to the headphone jack plug and CRANK IT UP !!!! I can still hear the Music over 85MPH......

I have a SKYFI3 and works great nice large display and buttons you can get a small amp (fits under seat) speakers and radio and have less than $200 into it. Radio is removable from cradle and you can down load music onto a micro sd or get live xm. I hard wired 12 volt plug under tank or they have an internal battery built in and also got volume control from radio shack and is on hand grip just use thumb for up and down. Good Luck!!

I use these on my Magna. Hardwired to the battery. It works great with my Ipod, Satellite Radio. or GPS. Sounds great at any speed with or without a helmet. Also matches the Kuryakyn grips, mirrors, levers, pegs, etc. that I have on the bike.

What type of extra lighting is that you have mounted? Does it come all as a set or more like individual pieces/ How spendy? Thanks.

The question is not what you look at...but what you see...

The lighting is a Cobra lightbar.....since that pic was taken, a little crash took out one of those spots, so I upgraded to some Cobra halogens, I like the new ones a lot better
