I just purchased a Kwik Kamp MC Tent Trailer... I have a 98 Tourer...  Is it OK/Recommended to wire direct to the brake/run/turn electrical wires  or run through (ex: Hoppy) Power Converter.   My understanding is that a power converter will isolate the trailer/electrical (or any grounding/short) issues from the motorcycle electrical.      Any experience/suggestions... Thanks   Vinnie in N. Idaho

You are right, the best thing is use the Hoppy adapter
to keep them isolated.

The Hoppy power converter is a 5/4 wire converter. The output is the same as a Uhaul trailer plug. If your trailer is a 5 wire system, it won't work without some extra wiring.

Like Sandy said, the hoppy converts to a 4 wire.  If your trailer still needs a 5 wire setup, you can use this one from  electrical connection.com
http://www.electricalconnection.com/wire-harnesses/hrns-trailer.htm

I've got one on both my bike and car for my apsen trailer.  When I need to go to 4 wire I use the trailer light converter adapter. This way I've got the best of both worlds.

If you need more info let me know.

My theory a the shop is this and if someone jury rigs a connection, them and their tool box are out the door.

If it is a plug and play unit, go ahead and use it, by this I mean, it has to be an unplug, plug a factory built piece in between the 2 ends.

If you have to do any wire cutting to achieve your task, HARD WIRE it, solder and heat shrink all connections.  If heat shrink isn't possible, then use liquid tape.  IF the connection is exposed to dirt and slush, liquid tape it and then do it again to protect the wiring.

I have been on too many rides/trips where someones trailer lights quit working, and then find one of those firkin little blue 'stick wires in' press the little wedge down and snap a cover over it.    They have corroded to a green color and or the wedge missed the wire in the process.   Well, not missed it completely, but missed enough that after some use, it no workie no more, but the connection looks good from the outside.

The Kwik Kamp trailer  I bought has SEPERATE brake and run and turn signals... so it is a 5 wire (plug).
So I suppose  it "could" be wired direct  (but risky),    Any part# for Hoppy or other manuf. converter with a 5 wire.   Thanks
