Well, it was a beautiful day here.  No rain!  I decided to adjust the needle jets and balance the carbs.  I was using the kill button in between adjusting the needles for each carb.  On the 4th time doing that, I heard a SNAP when I hit the starter button, and everything went dead - no lights, horn, no nothing.  I checked the main fuse, and it was okay.  I rocked the kill switch back an forth many times - no change.  I recall on previous posts that there was a bolt you sometimes had trouble with that was near the radiator.  Could that be the cause, and where exactly is it located.

Your help is greatly appreciated.  This is the first time my bike has failed me.

Buzz bolt buzzes, its a bolt...tighten it, it stops (sometimes) making noise....hit the starter and hear a "snap" thats not the buzz bolt Id check the starter relay unit behind the right side cover, it may be melted, or if thats ok, maybe starter button maintenance, then ground cables and all the other fuses.  If you were talking the 55A fusable link, that cuts power to the alternator, all the other fuses are in a little box also behind the right side cover

I went out after the post - and I had power.  Hit the starter button and snap - no power.  Shorted between the battery posts - nothing.  The battery was completely dead!!!  And it was only 2 years old!  I guess I'm in the market for a new battery.  Can anyone tell me if the batteries at Walmart are any good?

I use them.......just make sure you follow the directions closely as far as filling and sealing, then put a ful charge with a 1 or 2A trickle charger before installing to the bike

Better check that fusible link and starter relay before you worry about a battery. hoser

I had the same symptoms on my 2000 I/S, and it was a bad battery, right out of the box. I returned the bad battrey and bought a Yuasa, that fixed the problem.

Check out this connector in the right side cover under the rubber boot.

If it looks like this, then you need to order the part# in the next picture.

Order this part for an older Gold Wing.    You will need to move the RED wire to the empty slot on installarion.

Move the RED wire.

Don't test a battery by shorting the terminals.  Yeah, my dad used to do that, and maybe yours, but it's about the worst thing you can do to a healthy battery, and really doesn't tell you much.  You can get volt meters dirt cheap these days even at home depot.  Much more accurate and safe.

Hey Brillo just went out to take a ride this morning and of course my walmart ( Everstart ) battery is dead! turned over a couple of times then nothing. the battery is 4 years old. is that the average life of a valk battery? don't know? I would like to upgrade to a gell-cell or whatever battery that is best suited for the valk. SO the question is what battery do you guys think is best for the valk and where do I get one? and I have the IS does that make a difference?

Thanks, Hoosiervalk

You received an extra two years out of that WalMart battery. They are warranted for two years only!

Go get another one, it's an AGM battery, which is what you seem to be suggesting.

I use WalMart batteries and buy a new one every 2-3 years depending on when  big trip is comming up.  Its never good to just let them go until they die.  They can put excessive wear on the alternator the last few months of their life

Well I went on the search for best battery and came up with the YUASA YTX14H-BS 240 CCA from Motorcycle Online Store for 79.96 + 9.95 shipping. I ordered one this afternoon. TSB has a great deal for the YTX14-BS 200 CCA for 59.95 & free shipping ( 200 is OEM ) but I opted for the extra 40 CCA. If it pans out to be better or not who knows???
