Hi. I was in the driveway under the bike looking to see how the 'Jack Adapter, Stays On Bike' attaches and I find this can or tank right where the adapter goes. I looked at the desmog article in Shoptalk, not there. Checked Pinwall and on page 26 or so, there it is; Charcoal Cannister.
I did a search on the Tech forum, 6 articles, all just say that it's a California bike, and that's it.
Can I install the jack adapter with this thing present? It was asked a few times, and not answered. Can I just remove the thing and do something with the hoses so that there's no bad effect to the running of the bike? I plan on doing a full de-smog sometime this summer, but don't want to do it right now. I just want to change the tires and get on the road.
Seems my new BigBF horns go in that spot as well. I want the can gone. Any advice? Thanks, Fred.

That's part of the California emissions. If you want it gone now, you need to desmog now.

If your not the original owner that can may be an auxiliary fuel tank called "The Belly Tank". If it is I would keep it!!!

Nice idea, I've looked at the belly tank page a dozen times. No, its an emissions device. Fred.

It is not an insurmountable problem, but I expect you'll find that your BigBF horns and your adapter will get in each other's way also... I put my bike in the front-wheel-chock and looked up under there to see how the adapter would go on and found I'd have to cut a notch (or some such, I've slept since then ) in the adapter to get the the adapter and the horn mount to play nicely... -Mike

Me too. You just have to bend the mounting bracket for the horns a little. MP

My understanding is that it does not affect emissions. Are they going back that far? The state site says MC exempt. In the Memphis, TN city page, it says at the top MC testing. But, down in the body, it says these are exempt: Sec. 21-306 Exemptions from Motor Vehicle Emission Requirements (1) The following classes of motor vehicles are exempt from the emission requirements established in Sections 21-304 and 21-305 of this Chapter: (a) Antique motor vehicles with antique registration; (b) Electric powered light-duty vehicles; (c) Motorcycles; (d) Motor scooters; (e) New motor vehicles registered for first time. (f) Tactical military vehicles; (g) Vehicles over 26,000 GVWR MP

Well, now you say "heard may change" the law. Before you said "now TN is going to require all motorcycles pass emissions testing". Those are two quite different statements. There is a big leap from someone saying that a law should be passed to do something, and to actually having that law passed. I would not worry about it for now. Also, get active. Contact those who pass these laws, and let them know you are NOT in favor, and why. I am not sure if a older, carb bike would have passed new out of the crate anyway. If not, they will probably stay exempt anyway. We all need to get politically active. It is amazing sometimes what a little local input can do. MP

good Lord have mercy!!!! ok to be politically correct here,,,, I desmogged my bike, i HEARD on the news that they may require bikes to start passing emissions testing to be able to register your bike...no dates were mentioned,,,, now dont go into panic mode just yet because this is all just hearsay,,, BUT think of this, if you modify your emissions and they do decide to make this a requirment,, a lot of us could be in trouble,,, there is that better?

I took the charcoal canister off my (Calif) rig so I could use the "other" lift adapter. If I remember correctly there are three individual pieces of tubing that connect to the can. All three are venting in exit mode into the can before vapor goes to the outside atmosphere. I removed the can... then zip-tied the hoses together so they hung there out of the way. Never experienced any ill side effects sans charcoal canister. I saved the can so its easily replaced if needed. sheets

I don't know how you're local emissions testing/requirements are done.
But here, I would have to return the vehicle to it's original emissions when made. Not just have to pass an emissions test and be within range.
I gave Dag a copy of the RIVCO center stand installation, that included the California model with the cannister. You take the bracket off, and bend it about 45* or more and use an extention. Take a look at that, and see if this would move it enough to get it out of the way for your other installations.

Looks like I can just remove the can. If it does affect anything I'm sure I can find a way to reinstall it later. Thanks, all, Fred.

Chill out! MP did the research to find out what you wanted to know about TN law. You should be thanking him instead of jumping in his crap. Maybe there is more entertainment value in spreading misleading information.
