Tire wear

I am usually pretty picky about checking my tire pressure

I checked and added to 46 rear before leaving for the powwow but failed to check it before leaving for home a thousand miles later.  The ride home was 500 miles only

This morning before riding to test the new rear brakes I checked and found 36 on the rear cobra
AND the center (one inch or so) of the tread was at the wear mark. The rest of the tread had loads of tread on it

Next week I will put on another thousand going to americade and riding the adirondacks vermont massachusetts and probably connecticut

Those of you who have run the cobra's what was the point where cords came thru?

I was hoping to be able to use the tire to go to Maggie Valley but now I am thinking I should change it out

I had to turn around and head home last weekend on " Britman's Memorial Weekend Ride " because I thought I could get one more ride out of my tires....I thought wrong     Seems once they start looking " iffy " it does'nt take long and you have cords hangin' out of them.....Get off some of that lawyer money you have buried in the back yard in a mason jar and get some new tires

I'm much harder on side walls in the chicken strips than the center . For the record T-Bird had just told me " That front tire ( Cobra ) is looking bad Joe " thats what made me pull over a few miles down the road to check it again that's when I saw the cords hangin' out of the side walls on my Copper Zeon 2XS on the rear.....I'd change it out Evan with the long rides you have planned

  I changed from E-3 to Cobra a few thousand miles ago and like them a lot.  How many miles on yours before tread mark. Don't think i will get down that far.  

  i'd say "tread mark" . . . "New Tire"  It will feel so much better.

around 10000 miles   It has worn better than the metzler.

Only now is it just starting to develop a bit of a flat spot and I blame myself for not checking the tires before heading home Monday.  Lesson learned

I had to get a tire mounted in Nashville last summer after thinking I could get the trip finished with that tire.......(was on the Natchez Trace when I noticed it was going bad.....very stressfull....I knew I wouldn't make it all the way home.....glad I found a dealer to mount it.

Get new tires BEFORE the trip......that was the lesson I learned.

It was a Metz....on my third set....I love 'em ( but I use the center of my tires more than Joe does, LOL)

I may be wrong, but 46psi seems a little high, when you over fill a tire it rides more on the center (high point of the tire), lower psi will flatten the tire more for a wider contact patch with the road.
That could be your reason for center wear.

I think most folk on the board run 40-42, I run 40 front and back and so far no irregular wear.

A double 'flaming death' some how gives me a strange peace of mind,just have to remember to look at the tread every 10 to 20 k

That could be your reason for center wear.

I've never worn out a rear tire yet due to flats  but Kim's Valk has 11,000 miles on the rear Avon & it looks like it will make at least 15K. I keep them at the 40-42 psi that Jim referred to.

I have Avon Cobra's on mine and they are so loud i cant hardly hear the radio,,,not sure what will be next but it wont be Avons,,,,

What on Earth caused this Dunlop E3 to wear like this?  I called myself checking it once a week or so, kept it in the 34-36 psi range.  It looks like under inflation, maybe.  I call myself "agressive" in the twisties, but Geeze.

That pressure is way to low, I'd be surprised if you said you had better than 10K on that tire.  I've been running E3's for the last 3 years.  They average 17 - 23K depending on how good your are about staying on top of your air.  I run about 44 psi in the rear and 42 in the front.

This is my first Avon rear after about 8k miles.




I was running around 40 psi (TOO LOW).

With the second Avon I bumped up to 44 psi and it did the same thing around 9k miles.

On mine the cords always showed up to the sides of center.

My experience with the Avons has been that once they begin to show wear it isn't long before the cords are showing.

My biggest concern would be the 10 psi drop in pressure.

Every time that I've ever had a drop of more than a couple psi in a short period of time it turned out that something had sprung a leak.

I switched to E3's because of the poor mileage that I was getting from the Avon's.

They do much better 10-12k mi vs 8k mi.

I weigh in around 250 (figure rider weight is a factor in tire wear) and have been runnig 46-48 psi in the rear.

I weigh in at 230, my girlfriend (let me check and see if she's looking) tips the scale at 150.  We ride 2 up at least half of the time.

The E3 failed at 14k miles.  Once it started showing wear, it ground down fast on the sides.  As you can see there is still plenty of rubber in the center.

I may have subconsciously neglected the tire (?confession).  I had a Michelin CT waiting for its turn.

I weight 260 pounds and commute 80 miles per day to work and back in CA.  Roads, here are not the best however I'd imagine there are far worse, so that may be a factor also.  I've found the 42 and 44 to be a good balance.  Two pounds difference in air pressure over time creates more wear and less mileage.  I'm good about the maintenance and tire checks because I'm commuting so much. Don't by cheap valve stem caps, they'll leak slowly over time because the rubber washers will wear and fail due to pulling them on and off constantly to check the pressure. I keep mine good and snug.

Oss... I took a questionable tire on vacation a few years ago... I had to BEND over huge at the Honda Dealer in Charleston to get a new one.  SUCK!

Got myself over to my local motorcycle shop early this morning with the Valkyrie, the Battlaxe 200 series tire and a nice metal valve stem I got from MP a few years ago
Took the bags off before riding over to kinda lower the shock of the bill when it comes.
and avoid any damage to my bags that would be denied by the shop
Hope they will have the bike done by tomorrow night as I told em I have a room at americade thursday nite and would hate to miss it

They said they would not have passed the tire on the inspection that is due next month.

After the Battleaxe I may go back to the darkside but with a different tire than the toyo proxes T1R

BigD is really diggin the tire I gave him after riding it for a year but it just wasnt for me.
