Tourer "Scoops" for routing cooling air to feet

I recently rode a buddy's Interstate.  I couldn't understand why my feet were cooler on his bike than mine.  I didn't know Interstates had "scoops", but when I asked him, he showed them to me.  He has a Tourer in addition to his Interstate, so he knew they were different.

I decided to try to come up with something that would help my feet stay a little cooler on those hot days.  Here's what I came up with.  It's actually a chrome under-sink drain pipe that I put in a vise to make oval and then cut to length.  I put 2 slices in it at the front and rear and mounted it to the engine guards with stainless hose clamps.

They're not at nice as the Interstate ones, and they don't flow as much air, but they definitely help.  A couple of weeks ago (before I had these mounted), we rode on a warm day (about 90-95) and I had to have my feet on the highway pegs almost all the time to keep them from roasting.  I've only ridden once since I installed these, but I could tell they will help.

SORRY FOR THE BLURRY PICS!!!

Man those would nicely hold a roman candle or other big rocket firework for use with inattentive cagers.

I don't know about reaching down there with a lighter, so ignition would have to be worked on.

I believe the IS scoops do little.... remember the IS pods are primarily designed to shoot radiator heat out to the sides while moving forward.

I own an Interstate and two Standards.  I personally don't think either the scoops or the pods are effective.

That said, if the scoop were to actually deliver cooler air it would need to be squeezed at the rear to increase the speed and thus drop the temperature of the air passing though it.

My Interstate is the most hot of my Valkyries.  If you really want to avoid all that heat get rid of the lexan on the front.   ;)

I'm pretty much in agreement Carl.  The pods may work pretty good at 60-70+, but better than nothing at all like the std/tourer?  (I don't think so).  The scoops are a ... curiosity.

Like many, I ate so many bugs thru the fairing vent, I had to go on a diet and plugged it with foam.  And I keep forgetting to take it out in this incredible heat..... (note to self).

I have the old OE IS hinged windshield wings, and turn them out like we did on our old cars.  I have procrastinated on a chopped summer shield way too long.  (sweating emoticon here)

Like this, Jess?

I've been looking for a set of the hinged wings - just the hinges, really. Someone told me he had a set, sent me pictures, I wrote back, and never heard from him again. I'll find a set, someday, or end up making somewhat permanent brackets. I want to make a custom set, to extend out over my hands, for winter riding. I can ride down to mid-30's, but my hands get cold, no matter what gloves I have.

yeah, it's hot here too, but as I'm sweating, I'm thinking "37 mpg, not 15!!".

Nice idea.
Do you clean them with Drano or chrome polish?

That garage is disgustingly clean.  (and enviable)
take personal responsibility and keep your word
