Disclaimer. I'm not an overtly religous person.

To read that Perry was exhorting Christians to pray for governmental guidance smells of vote pandering.

Flame suit on.

I know nothing about his politics or him personally. I was encouraged by his willingness to go ahead with his "prayer meeting" Could be pandering, could be political suicide, it takes courage to take a stand these days. Sad to hear he's not so popular as governor. Most of the people I associate with pray for our representatives and for "governmental guidance", heaven knows we need more direction than we have now.

BigAl

Perry is leading a state that is more prosperous than most others in this time of down turn.

I believe him to be the one for the job and he will win.

Don't ask me how I know.

But you heard it from me 1st.

If you don't like Governors that pray, then you scare me more than him.

Right now I would like some devine deliverance from those,,,,,,,,, that think we can borrow and spend our way to prosperity.

What a bunch of idiots we have up there in Washington.

Pelosi, Reed, and Obama,,that has to be some kind of punishment for something America did at some point.

Just wish we could have weathered the 3 Amigos better than we have.

I've heard both sides of this debate, he'd be horrible/great.

Texas has done well through out the recsession acounting for 38% of ALL jobs created since the begining in '08.

ya'll in Texas let us know how he is.

could he be worse/better then Romney?

I'd take him over Romney, but I'd be none too thrilled about it...

On the plus side:
BIG pro 2nd Amendment
BIG pro business
CHL and he carries, and isn't afraid to use it - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/27/AR2010042705323.html
He might have taken over the governorship from W, but him and W do not, in the slightest, see eye to eye. In fact, there's some major animosity between the two of them...

On the negative side:
Likes to pray publicly just a little too much (Don't care about someone's religion, but when they feel the need to trot it out in public all the time, it makes me wonder what their true intentions are)
Sleazy deal where he tried to force all Texas school girls to receive a controversial anti STD vaccine, and lo and behold, there were some personal $$$ties$$$ to the company that made said vaccine.
Tolls across Texas. Tried to use imminent domain to seize private property to turn over to for profit companies to make for-profit toll roads.

Pro or con depending on your personal view:
Militantly anti-choice on abortion
Extreme right wing on social issues

So, he's a hard core conservative on social issues, and a hard core conservative when it suits him on business issues, IMHO...

I will grant him this much though...

(That's me on the left, my dad on his right) He really walks the walk when it comes to 2nd Amendment issues, which is a BIG deal for me. I have my CHL, and I was carrying when that picture was taken, I was never checked, frisked, questioned or anything of the sort. I doubt many other politicians of governor level or higher would allow the unwashed masses to get that close to them...
(Oh, and he's not really that short, I'm just a wee bit on the tall side... ;) )

Or, a shorter summary - I didn't vote for him in the primaries, but I (Held my nose and) did in the general election...

I was born and raised in Texas,  always been a democrat, but the democratic party is no longer the democratic party I was raised with so I've been looking elsewhere.   I'm not a big republican fan but I'll say that Perry has done a jam up job here in Texas to keep us above the national average of states that are doing well.   It's not that he has done that great.....it's just that he aint done that bad.  The fact that he is a Christian boosts him up in my book tremendously.   Folks, we better get our act together and once again become a Christian nation or we are all doomed.     I greatly admire Perry for not letting the aclu or any other atheist group that is headed for Hell deter his meeting.   Houston has shown in their support for Perry's DAY OF PRAYER that it is still a huge Christian town.  I'm proud of Perry for not letting outside influences get in the way of his trying to help us all get back on track with God.

Oh my, a Christian that actually prays....run for the hills!

Actually, Christians, real Christians, not the phony carnal ones that are so common today, can control the direction of our country. Praying for (not against) those in authority over us is done by real Christians around the world.

All the best,

Mark

Digger, just because Obama says were not a Christian Nation doesnt mean that is true.  And just because some liberals in government see fit to  try to rewrite history cant change the fact that even the least of the religious of the founding fathers were more outspoked about God and the importance of God in the molding of our country than a so-called outspoken Christian of today.

The world is in turmoil and so is the US.  It may get better, it may get worse, but ultimately its going to be what its going to be because God has a plan and he is in control not us.

Christians pull together when the chips are down (thats how you know who the real ones are sometimes) Non-Christans even ones that say they are Christian will panick......we shouldnt sweat it, this downgrade and economic trouble is just a thing, it too shall pass

BUT, I believe it is our duty to IMPEACH OBAMA and hold him acountable for his actions.  We do have a responsibility to stand up and put people in DC that care about the country instead of their own @$$ or secret agendas.

As said before (flame suit on)

I have No problem with prayer, and Texas economy was already getting better before he took office, so HE cannot get ALL the credit for that.....  It is the OTHER problems that bother me.

I vote " none of the above" and start over..

A lot of great responses above.... keep the discussion going, but be nice.....  no nasty arguements.  :coolsmiley:

I too have no problem with prayer by a person of ANY religion.

I do get conflicted with Govt and Religion.

Kids should pray in school if their religion warrants it. Then it gets tricky with Muslims neding to face Mecca five times a day. That seems disruptive to other students.

And so it goes and so it goes.

Difficult to find an answer to make all happy.

Didn't Perry advocate secession from the Union a few years ago?

And didn't he start his political career as a Democrat and then help run Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign?

Somehow his 'political purity' might be suspect.

You know why jobs are being created in Texas? Because people there will work for next to nothing and they have weak labor laws. It's the same reason why Boeing wants the 787 plant in SC, it's not because Texas SC are so wonderful and have deep talent pools. They're just employer friendly. I mean when you can compete with China for labor standards that favor employers then something's wrong.  :2funny:

Perry won't make it far enough in the process to be president. If there's one thing we've learned about people like him it's that eventually he'll be caught in some kind of sex scandal that will expose him as not being the man of god he advertises himself as.

No, not evidence about Perry in particular but rather, evidence about evangelicals and conservative defenders of traditional Christian family values. They rarely match the public image they put forth. They end up being just as deviant as your average American, sometimes even moreso because they're repressed. Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, Warren Jeffs, Larry Craig, Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, Roy Cohn... I could go on and on...

I didn't vote for slick rick in the last gubernatorial election, but even I have to admit that he's been nearly squeaky clean on the personal level.  OK, so he spends a lot on haircuts, but look at that hair!

I'm not worried about any connection to the Koch brothers.  It's his visit to the bilderbergers that's problematic.

Refresh my memory please, was Reagan a Democrat or Republican when he gave stinger missiles and other assorted weapons (that are still being used to kill our troops BTW) to the Taliban and facilitated the sale of arms to Iran to simultaneously facilitate the release of American hostages (we don't negotiate with terrorists) and fund South American rebels?

The ATF under Obama lets a few guns go south of the border and Obama needs to be impeached, but the Gipper showered weapons on rogue states like a broken pinata and he's still a hero. F**kin hypocrites.
