I am sure many of you already know how to do this.  I posted earlier that my starter button was failing.  WELL.... I figured out how to bypass the starter button and want to know if it will damage anything doing it this way.  If you turn the key to on, and jump the two terminals on the relay behind the right side cover, it will turn over and start. 

Can this damage the bike in anyway?  This is not something I plan on doing daily but just incase the button fails while away from home.

Please advise.

Thats a high amp circuit right there.  I dont think if you need to leave them wires connected that its a good idea.  a momentary grounding just to start it, if thats all it needs seems a reasonable emergency measure though

What I did was just cross them with a screwdriver until it fired.  That would be ok, right?

I think if it meant getting home or being stranded I would do it

That is basically what the relay (that your bypassing) is doing.(Minus the sparks!) Replacing the starter relay is the repair. I would do the jumper thng, as opposed to pushing the bike. Then I would find the nearest Honda shop and purchase the part

it's the easiest way to get her turned over when the starter button fails, won't hurt a thing. Push starting is not much of an option unless you're Superman

What you doing with the screwdriver is ok. Been doing it for years on just about anything that has a solenoid from lawnmower to tractor or autos. Get a new relay as soon as you can thou.
    As far as push starting a valk it is fairly easy to do. I've push started mine several times because for an alt. that was going out and I was 250 miles from the house. I turn on the key put her in sec or third and hold the clutch in, get her rolling jump on the seat pop the clutch and she'll lite off. It really does have to be rolling very fast either.

the important thing is that don't keep holding the screwdriver to the two post for an hour straight. I think 20 seconds is the most that's safe. That's even with a working relay where you can fire up the bike by using the start button. Then you have to let things rest in between tries. The wire from the starter relay to the starter-motor gets really hot. That's all I'm going by. I've never measured the amps with a voltmeter or anything like that.

The part in question here, is it part# 38501-GN2-014 (RELAY, STARTER) which looks like it would be hard to jump, or part# 35850-MT4-000 (SW, STARTER MAGNETIC).

Yep. That's how I started mine for a week until I got the start button fixed/rigged. It does help to aim it down hill if that's an option, but flat is doable. Just not UP hill. I'm 6'1" - 235 lbs - 40 " inseam. I push it from the saddle. I realize that this isn't an option for everybody, but if you've got my general build, it's not that difficult.

carry a push button stater switch napa $5 and some heavy gauge wire use the stater button as your screwdriver.  Ask me how I know this.  It works great. let it hang on the right side just below the seat.

Jumped started a tractor once with a pair of pliers. The bad thing was it was in gear and almost ran over me. Must be careful when bypassing safety stuff.

Thats why i have a rider, to help push start. She is also my reverse, which is embarrasing but I got use to it.
