Ordering (EXTRA) parts, just incase.

My Valk is a 99 standard and I have decided to pick up some extra parts while I can afford them.  I am at the hdlparts.com web site and can not find just a Universal Joint.  I can only find the yoke with the universal.  Is that how it comes or can you replace just the universal?

Also if you had extra money what parts would you buy to have for furture breakdowns?

Might want to put a coolant reservoir in your stockpile....they have a known failure point at the bottom nipple and are still relatively cheap.  I had my original crack and replaced it a few years ago.  Took the opportunity to buy a spare while they can still be had.

Any "hard" part, such as side covers, alternator cover, radiator trim, final drive, original exhaust, alternator, and the list goes on.  Some of these are already hard to find in new condition unless you have very deep pockets.  I've been collecting mine for 10 years now and bought a lot of these when the price was right.

It's always nice to have a selection of maintenance items; such as wheel bearings, steering head bearings, swingarm bearings, yoke, fork seals, shock bushings, wheel dampers...

Another area to consider includes the specialty tools for the steering head, swingarm, and forks.  These will be needed for maintenance down the road.  Some (or all) of these can be fabricated, but the Honda OEM tools will command a premium and probably hold their value (and usefullness).

Besides those above, at least one set of OE front rear brake pads, oil filters, air filter, a set of tires, a petcock cover-set, fuseable link.

I want to add that I just received some Interstate specific parts and was quite surprised how quickly they came.

Being that they made the Interstate for such few years it would be prudent for those that intend to keep their Valkyrie to consider stashing a spare part or two for future use.

I'm in the process of making a list right now, trying to get to that "free shipping" amount at HDL.

I have a whole box of misc. stuff and just ordered a new OEM thermostat & gasket. Next month I'll be ordering an OEM petcock repair kit--for just-in-case--I'm still using the OEM petcock with 241K on it.

I believe that the bearings of the coupling are staked not circlipped to the round recesses in the two yokes. Some earlier threads showed DIY replaceable units replete with a grease zerk.

When the money allows ( read: wife gives me permission) I'm going to either find a nice I/S and part my Std. for spares, or look for a low mileage, light wreck to strip.  Now where did I plant that money tree.....

a couple sets of orings/thrust washers, for final drive maintenance,couple tubes of moly paste, 



If you dont have a honda shop/maintenance manual, definatley worth buying..

Two sets of the three final drive O-rings, one set of 6 exhaust crush gaskets.

Tubes of dialectric grease, copper antiseize, molly paste, synthetic waterproof grease, blue and red loctite.  Cans of brake cleaner, electronic spray cleaner/lube, penetrating oil.

For the IS, a working spare radio.

most of those things are maintainance items and will always be around in one form or the other. what you need to keep your eyes out for are wheels, fenders, gears, the stuff honda has discontinued. your parts manager can tell you what they discontinued. i have some rear parts from triking mine. i would do some trading, or what is left is still for sale.

Keep in mind DLP/HDL just "may" be having a Labor Day sale (they usually do and that's 10 percent I think).  But... with the Hurricane they might postpone it to see if they are around afterwards  ....  just sayin. 

Gaskets and Belts might be something you want added to your list.  I was fortunate last year and won a $500.00 gift card at WVA Mountainfest. I spent it all on Valk stuff (gaskets, brakes, bearings, belts, and other misc stuff).... at the local WVA Honda Dealership and fortunately they price matched DLPs prices as well.  I got a spare set of wheels (2 rear wheels) and a complete rear end, drive shaft/yoke from a gent that triked his.  The Bike is a keeper of course... so why not get a few spare parts at the right price when they become available....

Has it ever occurred to you that the parts that wear out on one bike are also the same parts that wear out on all bikes of the same model? In that case, your parts bike would have to be in better condition than the ridden bike. Oh, were you joking. LOL, I was too.
