Battery Cable Connection Tip

First, I DID NOT COME UP WITH THIS IDEA.....I read about this trick on the board several months ago and it is slick.....forgot who originally posted it but THANKS !!

Every time I disconnect my battery cables along with a few accessory and ground cables I always had a heck of a time putting it all back together.  The "nut" that the screw goes into on the battery "floats" on the bottom in it's little holder.  With just the battery cables to install, the screw can attached to bolt without much problem.  But, add some accessory wires and the screw has trouble reaching the nut.  Usually I try to raise the nut with a small screwdriver and attempt to hold it in place while trying to get the main battery screw to line up and catch.  For me, very frustrating.  However,  SOMEONE (again, sorry I forgot who but much thanks anyway) posted their little trick of simply putting a small piece of material (rubber as I recall) under the nut which forces it to a higher position, holds it in place and thereby allows the battery screw to catch without a hitch even with several other wires connected to it.  Just tried this today and it was really slick !  I know I need to remove all those extra ground and accessory wires leaving just the battery cables to connect - and I will - but just wanted to share this with others who may be having problems re-connecting their battery cables.  Heck, this works great with just the battery cables.  I know, I know - simple things for simple minds.  LOL !!

I also didn't originate the idea, got it from an old timer when I was in "knee pants."  I use a piece of plastic hose, just a little chunk of clear about 3/8" long...maybe less, and about the same size in diameter as the rear tank breather hose on the Valk. It sure does save a lot of fumbling around with that nut on the battery post, and I just leave it in there until it's time for a new battery.

I've been doing that trick for many years.  I used to fold up a small piece of paper or rubber and stick under the nut, but now use a piece of scotch-brite.  Whatever works.

Thanks John and Steve..GREAT tip and life is a WHOLE lot easier regarding battery work for me and hopefully many others.  Just gotta love this board !!!  I'm ALWAYS looking for an easier way to do something....LOL !!!
