Said goodbye to Valkyrie and hello to Goldwing

In late August, I sold/traded my 2000 Standard that had 54,000 on her for a 2002 Goldwing that had 7,986 on the clock.  The GL 1800 was a one owner bike that was orginally purchased at the same dealership as my Valkyrie from the same salesman that had sold me my bike.  The previous owner had added over $5,000 in extras and I got what I considered a reasonable deal on the bike.

My wife does not ride with me so for years, I could not justify the cost of moving up to the Goldwing.

After riding it for a couple of months, I can tell you the Goldwing is quite a bike. 

I want to thank everyone that has contributed to my enjoyment of this site.  I admit that I miss seeing the reflection of the blue sky and clouds on the top of my headlight but really enjoy this new ride.

I'll check in from time to time to see what's going on and wish everyone the best of luck.

Hey CFLOYD - Don't mean to rain on your parade, and you may already know this .... those early 1800 Wings had some issues with the frame cracking and I believe there were some warranty coverage.  Just a heads up and you may want to look into it !!

And on a related note, you'll find a better class of people riding Valks.

No big deal, my friend.  You've traded a little performance for some additional creature comfort.  Two of my best riding buddies have GW's.  Of course neither can hang if I'm cranking on it.  They also wish they had a website that was as cool and informative as ""valkyriefourm."  Even if the Valk wasn't the greatest cruiser ever made, I'd still have one for this fellowship!

I've never said my buddies had my riding skills.

I'm just playing.  My idea of being sporty is raising my Kury pegs up a click.  I ease up when the center stand starts to scrape.

If I feel like dragging knees, I don't do it on a Valk or a GW.  I have another bike much more suited for that.

Thanks for the clarification. BTW, I agree with you about the "fellowship" we enjoy being unique. I would not trade my Valk for a GW. To me, the Valk is different, while the GW is more like a Dodge Minvan. Does everything well, but not my cup of tea. Hey, just MHO.

What if you have both? That was my solution. Kept my 1991 Wing when I bought my 1997 Valkyrie. I have the best of both worlds I think. And a 1998 KLR! Got it all covered. And yes, I belong to three forums.

  Well I think I can honestly reply to this.  I have owned  6 Goldwings in the past.  Always wanted a Valk just could not find the right bike.  I also have a likeing to Sport Tourning bikes.  Right now I feel blessed  I own a 2000 Valk  Red/Black and a red 2006 GL1800 wing. Sold my Kawasaki Concours and traded off my GL1500.  I think I have the best of riding in these 2 bikes. Just did a 1600 mile ride on the wing.  But I ride the Valk almost every day.

Don't leave because you got a wing.  Hell, if it wasn't for the Goldwing there wouldn't be a Valkyrie. Thirty six years and counting for the wing.

A while back there was a discussion about soul and personality of a Wing versus a Valk.  I think the rider makes both.  People my gravitate to the Valk because it's different, but when a rider starts talking about rides and what they saw, people gravitate to listen to the stories.

I've owned both.  4 Goldwings ranging from a 1975 GL 1000, 1978 GL 1000 (I bought in Japan, 1975 before they were shipped to the United States) 1981 GL1100 to my present 2006 GL 1800.  Had a 2001 Valkyrie I/S that I put 120,000 miles on in less than 5 years.

Stay and enjoy the riders here.  IMHO, a better class of riders.  The soul is the rider not the machine.

But that's my worthless $0.02.

Congrats on the Wing, but condolences on getting rid of the Valk. I have owned Valks since they first came out in '97, and have been a Wing owner since '86. Currently I have both in my garage because the wife will only ride on the back of the Wing and prefers the comfort compared to my '02 Standard. The Wing is a great bike, but in all my solo rides, the Valk. always gets the nod. As many have said-the Valk. has soul, not to mention absolutely great looks.

also over heating and gage problems. All which are covered under warranty recalls.

I recall also on some GW sites a problem with the steering head bearings.

I also traded my Valkyrie and GL1500 in on a 2012 goldwing.  The new wing now has 3400 fun miles.  I would have liked to have seen a drag race between the Valkyrie with dyna 3000 and the GL1800 goldwing.  I'm thinking that would be the drivers race to win or lose.  Stock the goldwing is the faster machine.
