K&N Prefilter question.

Hey,

I have a K&N and the Prefilter is looking a little shoddy,  it looksl ike it had leached some oil from the filter and is now starting to break down and fall apart.

I contacted K&N and explained the problem to them to which they replied that they don't currently make a "wrap for the HA-1596", which is the number I looked up for my Tourer.  The guy asked for the number molded on the filter.

I really don't want to take everything apart again just for the number, so I was wondering if anyone knew the number molded on the filter, if they have a K&N with a Prefilter?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

My K&N has been in for nearly 40k miles with no prefilter, runs fine.

I think your contact at K&N is confusing your request. I was shorted the foam prefilter on my K&N from HDL. When I called K&N they promptly shipped me a foam prefilter no problem! I think the rep you talked to is confusing the "Outerwears" product they make with the foam prefilter. The Outerwears is a wrap that is used to cover up cone style clamp-on K&N filters to give them some water protection. Obviously an Outerwears type thing won't work on a stock Valkyrie air filter. Call K&N back and talk to another rep.

10-04 what Tropic Travler says.

Make sure they understand that you have a Valkyrie, don't tell em any part #'s, that only confuses them  LOL..........

I've had my K&N in for mucho years and I do not run a prefilter.  Never did and don't plan on it in the future.....

So toss it, put it back together and ride the snot out of it instead.......   It lets the Phat Lady breath a lot better also.  I added a BigBF spacer in the front of the tank and got some more fresh air in those 6 little carbs........  MGM will fly if ya crank his tail good......

Thanks all,

I ended up calling them after I responded to the Email,  they're sending a new one to me.

Y'all mentioned/ said to not use the prefilter, what are the issues with not using it, besides better breathing?

Will she have any problems with anything?  I understand that some don't use it and haven't had any problems, but I worry about jetting issues with changing the air flow.  I do like the idea of not having to use it since it's a pain to get the prefilter back in there without getting it all pushed around, since I have wiring for my J&M radio on top of the Filter houseing, and this makes for some interesting times trying to put things back together.  It'd be so much simpler if I can just not use the prefilter, I'll keep it for the future if I ever think about selling her, which I doubt will ever happen.

Thanks again,
John
