Help!!! I think I ruined my windshield.

What's up everyone! Hope everybody had a great new year!

Well I think I will be buying a new windshield if I can't get mine cleared up. I was working with goof off and accidently sprayed some on my tourer windshield. I immediately wiped it off with soap and water, but it has left a very nasty haze on the windshield. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas on removing the haze? Thanks

You very likely dissolved the surface coating of the windshield. You can polish the windshield back to clear but you will likely remove this hard-coat finish that was factory applied to protect the softer plastic underneath. Novus plastic polish comes in three grits to speed up the process. I wouldn't want to do it without a power polishing tool like a random orbital buffer. Unfortunately, if you do get it polished it will pick up scratches like crazy without the OEM hard-coat finish.

First thing I would do is either ignore it, or look for a good used one.

After you get a used one, I would us the Goof for the rest of the windshield, and see how it comes off.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, that solvent may have done you wrong. If your interested in a new shield take a look at the Clearview products (see below). With their shield you use your existing mounting hardware. I've done this and am quite satisfied, in fact I think it's better than factory. Used OEM windscreens are hard to come by.

I had that bad feeling in my stomach when I saw the over spray on the windshield. I'm going to try the polish thing until I can order a replacement. I have heard good things about clearview, so I might be going that route once I recover from Christmas. I will keep you updated on trying to polish out the haze. Thanks for all the help!

My friend suggested I try some rubbing compound on the haze. It did absolutly nothing. No better, no worse. I will keep you updated on my next try.

+1 on using Novus to clear it up.  Start with tube #3 and work your way to #1.  Best I have ever used.

Did something similar to mine years ago and ended up cutting it shorter until I could get a new Clearview.  I cut it just low enough to see over the top while riding.

I wish I could cut it down, but its right in the middle. I will look into the Novus.

The stock Honda windshields have a coating on the plastic to make them more scratch resistant. If you chemically ruined the film, the only way to get the shield clear again, is to remove the film. This will make the shield scratch easily. Best course of action is to replace the shield. There are a number of threads on ruined windshields and what others did to fix. Give search a try

I hurt the film on my Interstate windshield and although it is not as clear as it was, with some work of polishing it is clear enough to not be noticeable.

There are still some patches of original you can see when the light is at the correct angle but the polish will minimize that to a great extent.

I pulled the coating off when I used masking tape to protect the windshield from the shoe of my jig saw when I was cutting it down. When I pulled the tape off the coating came off with the tape all along the top edge for about two inches.
