Too Much Air Comming Between Fairing And Gas Tank ?

Hi i have alot of air comming from bottom of fairing and the gas tank on a 99 interstate --hits me in the chest --not too bad when its hot but when its alittle cooler i would like to stop some of it --i dont know about the air wings that go on the forks and dont want to spend alot of money if they dont work --any input would be great --Thanks and Ride Safe !!!!!

Do you have the wings on bottom of the fairing? I had the same thing when I put a b'wing on. Did the fork wings with little effect. Once I put the wings under the fairing, it took it all away.

Are you sure that's where it is coming from?

Holding you thighs closer to the tank will stop most of that air, I find.

Very little coming over the tank.

Do you still have the small clear plastic "lowers" on the fairing?

Hi thanks i have the baker airwings on the fairing by the pods that helps with the air hiting the passenger -I had to remove the little air deflectors on the bottom of fairing they would have hit the new ones -i think i need the air deflectors that mount on the forks but dont know if they are worth the money --the air seems to be strong comming between the fairing and fuel tank --tryed some fome inserts from a 1500 wing and it cuts down on the air comming thru but looks like crap and they move around --goes around the handlebars between the fairing and the tank --THANKS

On my 2000 I/S with bakers I added the fork deflectors and now riding in cold weather is much better  (18 degrees is the coldest I've ridden in and no heated gear) ,, far less air coming up into my chest area.  Glad I added them.  For summer I leave them on and adjust the bakers to direct more air inward if needed.

You've robbed Peter to pay Paul and you're wondering why Peter is poor.

To do a thorough job you'll need the deflectors both on the bottom of the fairing and on the forks. 

Or you can simply learn to enjoy the wind knowing your passenger is comfy.

willow the word master is right.  You removed your lowers to add the bakers so you lost one but gained another. To me, my lowers were a waste of money. Even tho I got them for $50. Mine did no good on the tank wind, which is why I bought them. They are alot bigger then you normally see. Instead they help keep my hat from buffeting on my head. I do use them to travel as they are a good bug collector. The wing lowers took all my tank/chest wind away.

Maybe switch for a day and see what you like better.

Hey Bad,

Had the same problem.  When I got my bike, it had the bakers but not the fork lowers.  I made my own lowers. 



The lowers almost completely block the wind coming under the fairing / over the tank.  The bakers will scoop air into me during the summer so I leave the lowers in place.

had the same problem when i took those little deflectors off to install the bakers..put a set of fork deflectors on and that eliminated most of the chest wind.. keep in mind..when you install the fork deflectors..you will have to angle them towards the front of the fender. OR the first time you turn the handle bars they will smack the pods.

Thanks guys  your right i robbed peter to pay paul but they say a happy wifee is a happy me    the bakers stoped the wind from hitting her so i will try to fix my problem --joesvalk i love the wings you made how or what did you use to mount them   Thanks again

The fork deflectors definitely took care of the air coming up on my chest.

Used 3/16" aluminum plate and cut with standard hand held jig saw.
Filed and sanded edges.
Kept playing with design to contour top side with fairing and also width size so when you turn handlebars to stop, they did not hit pods. You can play with adjustment on forks - be it height and angle to get clearances.

Flask, any chance you could put up a template to save us all the experimentation? Or, if you make more, I know a few people who would pay a nice price for a set.

Even if you send them raw and I have to do the filing, sanding and paint.

I'm currently working on a template/pattern to make a Lowers Mounting Bracket.   I'll have it scanned and burned on a plasma torch/table.    Most manufactured Lowers I see are more for show, and not a lot a wind deflection.

This is exactly why I made the ones you see above.
For the Interstate Fairing - It took care of the air coming up on my stomach / chest area.
Also had to take care in that they did not hit the pods when fully turned.

Looks like yours will be for Standard / Tourer.
Post pics when you get them done.
