Progressive shock ?'s

I know that the stock shocks are 13 inches, but which progressive shock is closest to our stock ones? I like the stockers, and the adjustability , but at 13yrs old-ish they're probably about done. I'm 6'4" and 300# and usually only ride with the voices in my head.

12.5 closest to stock. The Progressive doesn't sag as much as the stock shocks. I'm 5'10" and bought some 13" and it raised me too high. Ended up swapping with another member.

The customer service guy I spoke with at Progressive recommended 13" as the proper replacement size.  I told him the prevailing sentiment here and he said the way it's supposed to be done is to then adjust the pre-load such that there is 1/2" sag when you sit on the bike.

Hi Pup,

I just fitted 412s (HD) at 12.5 inch.... didn't notice any difference over stock in terms of reach to the ground etc... but I think they actually rode a bit lower at the back as it set my headlight beams off aim (upwards) and I got flashed by other road users...

Seems a bit odd as conventional wisdom says that 12.5's are about equivalent when fitted of the stock 13's....my experience could suggest that the size is directly comparable... hmm... ???

I'm 5'11"... 13" 440's are perfect, I think. If you ride in
the mountains and aren't too short to use 13 inchers,
they work great. I'm not the fastest rider in the pack,
but still, I almost never drag anything. The underside
of my pegs are unscratched...

I've got a 98 Tourer and a 99 Interstate. The Tourer has 12.5" 440 HD's. The Interstate has 13" 440 HD's . I'm 6'2" 285 lbs and I prefer like the 13 " .

That sounds about right for your size.

I'm 5'10", at 210 lbs and I just installed Progressive 12.5 HDs on my Standard . .  PERFECT!

+1  6', 225 and all I can add is they are a major improvement over the 40K mile stockers I was running, and all of my voices like them too!

I think the PS 412s are closest to being a direct replacement for stock shocks.  440s are an upgrade.  At 300, you'll want HD.  At 6'4", I'd get 13".... a wee bit less bent knees to the center controls, and you won't have difficulty reaching the ground.  And theoretically, the taller shock should give a wee bit smoother ride with more travel.

I traded away 12.5s for 13s (440s) cause I need all the lean angle I can get (5'9").  Both bikes with 13" 440s have the floorboard edges ground off at 45*.... pegs don't touch as soon as cobra boards.

A number of bigger guys reported improvement in using IS OE shocks on a std/tourer, for a bargain.  But finding a good set would be iffy since they're also all over 11years old.
