Cigarette Lighter Adapter Option

I recently installed a cigarette lighter adapter and wanted to share what I found.

I first bought a adapter from an auto parts store (o'reilly's).  It was a fully enclosed housing (water resistant and no exposed wiring) which is what I wanted.  I was trying to get a nice clean look.  It also had a plug on the end which fits great on my Battery Tender plug which is already installed.  It worked great.  Only problem I had with it is the cord was only about 10" long.  I was wanting to secure the plug portion up around the handle bars somewhere.

Did some more research, checked other stores, even marine parts stores, and finally found one with a 3' cord directly from the Battery Tender website under accessories, though I ended up buying it from Amazon.

In short if your looking for an easy, clean, water resistant solution, either use the existing plug you already have if you have a Battery Tender plug installed, or can buy the harness itself from either their website or maybe Amazon or Ebay.  If its installed for use with your Battery Tender then just remember the output will always be on.

The only caution I can offer here is make sure whatever is plugged into this power point gets unplugged each time you turn off the bike. Even an MP3 player will drain the battery if left long enough, and the tender plug doesn't turn off with the key.

I took another route for this solution - I used the Kuryakyn "power point".  It mounts directly to the handlebars, is shaped to flow nicely with the bike, has a waterproof cover (or at least rainproof), comes pre-wired with the 2-pin ISO plug that connects directly to the battery tender plug (or to whatever you decide to wire it to - see: accessory circuit), has a long enough wire to reach from the handlebars to the area behind either side cover (plus a little bit).

Note: I am not paid to advertise this, just found it useful.

Andy, Is this the one you are referring to?

Is there a way to mount it or do you just have it loose somewhere?

I am looking to add one along with some other upgrades in the next couple months.

Here is a thread with some other options. I like the one that fordmano has. It fits nicely with the handlebar clamp, but I was planing to go with two single clamps so I could use the center area to mount a GPS.

Mr Steve

Nine years ago I bought one of those $14 three socket plug expanders from rat shack (you can even get them in the auto parts section of CVS and walgreens).  I took the plug off and direct wired it to my second fuse panel.  I used velcro to attach it to my risers.  Velcro has never let go.  It's been full of water uncountable times over the last nine years (was an outdoor bike).  Still works fine, although I just replaced it this year with a sleeker looking model with USB, don't yet know longevity of this one and this one I had to rewire with a relay and trigger off one of my three switches on the front brake res (last one had it's own switch).

Yes, thats the one I got.  I just having coming out of the middle panel under the seat, going over the petcock, under the tank, and along side the other cords and cables at the fork and have it zip-tied just past that.  I have it a little tucked away, so its not real noticeable, least until I start using it.  My main use for it would be my GPS.  I have a fuse block via a relay (only on when key is on) to run all my other items.
