air filter soaked with oil

Just purchased a 98 tourer in November and I have been putting a few accessories on it over the winter. Today I removed the tank to do some accessory wiring and to check the air filter. The air filter looks super clean like it was recently replaced by the previous owner but it is soaked in oil on both ends. I found that the air box drain tube (or pcv tube) was filled to within a couple of inches of the air box. I drained the tube.  It appeared to be filled with a watery oil mix. Luckily, I had ordered an air filter already. My question is, having drained the tube, should that correct the problem with the air filter getting soaked or do I need to be looking for any other problems?

Draining the tube should take care of the problem. Was the filter you removed a K&N ? Sometimes people over oil them I'm wondering where the oil came from.
Bet your glad you took the time to pull the tank. I have a 98 Tourer.

It was a stock air filter.

That tube needs to be drained occasionally, I due mine mid season and end of season at least.  How many miles on it?  It would take many 1000's to fill that tube,  Maybe it was never drained.

9600 miles on the bike. I'm thinking it would take a long time to fill as well. It's entirely possible the previous owner never drained it.

Gas mileage went from 20mpg to 28mpg after changing the air filter.  The bike is using a lot less throttle to maintain speed. Running quieter and smoother.

Drain the dragon drool every oil change. Sounds like it was never drained.
