If you just won the lottery, what would be the first thing you bought?
~~~WOLFGIRL~~~
The Anvil
Happiness!
No seriously how much money are we talking about? Because "the lottery could mean anywhere from $5000 to 300 million.
Boxer rebellion, the Holy Child. They all pay their rent.
Gas to go to Columbus,Ohio to cash it in... :)
If guns kill people where are mine hiding the bodies
Serk
Something that I've always wanted...
...my very own congressman! ;)
But seriously:
#1. Pay off all debt.
#2. Pay off all immediate family's debt.
#3. The owner of my favorite gun store would be a VERY happy man.
#4. A totally restored 1993 Toyota MR2 Turbo, as close to showroom condition as money can make it.
#5. Make sure a nest egg is set aside big enough that I never have to work again, and that my family will be taken care of.
I'd buy a Lawyer, and a financial planner.
Then I'd buy property somewhere out west.  Maybe even Alaska.  and, I'd buy a place somewhere for the summer, where the fishing is good, and the cost of living is cheap.  Cuba maybe?
Jabba
tbone
Pay off all debt, quick my job- Have a private party for all my friend at a favorite gentlmens club we go to once in awhile. Other than that I guess my wife will let me know.
Serk
A woman comes home yelling at her husband "I won the lottery - start packing!".
He asked her "Awesome, where are we going?"
She told him, "I don't care, just leave!"
Oss
Jabba how much you willing to spend on that lawyer?
:)
A place up north either in the Adirondacks or Catskills of NY
a place out west  both with lots of acreage
A place down south with docking for a sailboat  maybe on the St John River in Florida west of jacksonville Fl
My eyes arent good enough to pass the test to fly but if they were a twin engine plane and I would put private runways on my land like sky king had
a couple of old vintage cars  68 camaro, 69 mach1, 73 or 64 stingray
maybe a hemi cuda or roadrunner
Set my parents up so they never have to worry about anything
I could afford to be the winning better on one of Lori's PIES
1600 bmw (the thing is awesome); a vmax for those days I want something lighter
I would keep everything else
Maybe get a new secretary
As many have already said, pay off all debts for my immediate family and make sure they're all financially set for the remainder of their lives.
I'd get a nice place on the North Shore of Long Island out by Orient Point.
Have a few vintage cars.
And also fulfill a promise I made many years ago that if I even came into big money, I'd either supplement and existing, or start my own animal sanctuary. No furry ones would ever be turned away or put down for lack of being adopted. They would have a permanent warm and very comfortable home!  :)
The first thing I'd buy would be a new unlisted phone number.
Then I'd take a trip to the Eastern Med for six months to figure it all out, leasing/living on one of these with a crew of three (capt, deck hand and cook... is all they need).
Sh!t......... I may do it anyway.
The Anvil
If I won stupid money I'd set my family (and a few friends) up very comfortably and then prepare for the coming race-war. Then I would start a really top-notch aircraft mechanic's school and put the thieving bastards I just got through working for out of business.
Id buy a 911 call/trip to the hospital (weak heart, just in case)
Lawyer to keep the slobberin fools away
travel agent- go to fiji for a year.  About the amount of time the lawyer will need to keep the slobberin fools away.
Then enjoy, plan, enjoy.  Of course a well planned divi to the family falls in there but not till after the first year.  the more they slobber the less they get.
RIDE SAFE-RIDE OFTEN........GO BUCKEYES!!!
I'd pay off my bills, disappear and not tell anyone where I went.
Let yall know I won the lottery...and pay for the rooms at an In zane and then attend an In Zane...pick up my pictures at my desk, give my notice.
I like Jess' Idea about  the yatch, but do it in Aussie...then spend a year or two diving the great barrier reef....
and then ride the crap out of my Valk.
I would secretly buy this mansion nested in the woods up here, this would be  Oss' job as he will be on my payroll.
Set my youngest daughter up so she no have to worry about expenses, and problems from her ex as Oss would also take care of those problems and keep her out of trouble.
When Oss is not working, we will be riding on our 1600 BMW's, or maybe I'd buy another 3 wheeler, say Renegade type, exchange motors with my Chevy, then go riding with Oss some more.
Hell, who knows, I might just die from a massive heart attack, then my wife and kids will have to fight over it.   Wife would have the tie breaking vote, and again Oss would be officiating.   When the $$$$ is all gone, Oss is out of a job.
Would have to be an awfully big win.
         To help the homeless I would buy an apartment complex, open 4 bussiness maybe more, start out with a cabinet shop, M/C repair shop, auto repair, outboard motor repair. Then I would find homeless and people on welfare that wanted to work, set them up with apartment, teach them one of the trades,pay them during training, help them find a job after training, after a few paychecks they move out of my apartment and I start over with a new group. As long as the bussiness is breaking even then I would continue the process. :cooldude:
Well, I have news for ya'll, I've won it twice. It didnt change me, I still went to work on Monday and I didnt give any of it away. I didnt set any friends or family up, start a buisness,change my life in any manner whatsoever. I reinvested those two dollars right back both times.
HOWEVER, If I won big or moderately, I have talked this over with the wife, and she agrees, that we'd make it so families of wounded soldiers could spent the important healing time with their Soldier,Sailor or Marine. I'm sure that with a 300 million pre tax I'd have enough to live comfortably. How much do you really need?
I'd still go to work and pay off the house. I really like what I do and would maintain an even strain on the rope for a year. I'd just need a place to park the Duesie.
Aot of guys with burn marks,gnarly scars and funny twitches ask why I spend so much on safety gear
The first 10% after taxes would gladly be given, but not all to the same place of worship.  Next, obviously pay off our debt, do some remodeling around here, then do two things for the family. First one....set up a "chair"(trust fund) at the college two of my daughters graduated from and it would be in their names. They are the two afflicted with cancer, one we lost, the other appears to be losing her battle. Second.....set up an education trust fund for the family. That way all our kids, grandkids, great grandkids, etc., for generations to come would have their education paid for and it wouldn't be a burden to the parents. There would be limitations to be worked out, and if one didn't want to attend college but chose a Tech. school or something similar, they would still be able to make use of funds from the trust. Nobody would be left out.
alph
really, i've given it a lot of thought, and i would seriosly buy a modest home down south somewhere, wouldn't let anyone know i was filthy rich (tell 'em i have a disability and collect social security or something like that) no one would know that i won 'cause i would set up a "nameless trust" that the money would be claimed to, then would play alot, something i didn't do enough of as a child.
the only thing that would suck would be leaving my wife, she won't move out of state (don't know why), but i would leave her if i had a ton of money, she could come along, but i would be in control for once.
