changing shifter seal

I am trying to change out my shifter seal. I have the foot peg removed, and the bolt in the shifter extension removed also. I thought the extension would just pull straight out off of the shifter, but it is as if the bolt is still in it, which it is not. Any thoughts on how to remove it so I can get to the shifter seal to remove and replace would be greatly appreciated. I am going by Daniel Meyers instruction. I don't think I missed any steps up to this point.   :)

With the bolt completely removed, if it is stuck, then you might need to use a flat blade screwdriver to slightly pry apart the shifter a bit to slip off. Mine has never done this, so I'm just guessing.
I ride a motorcycle because nothing transports me as quickly from where I am to who I am.

It might be in shop talk but as I recall, you can drill a sheetrock screw into the seal next to the shaft. Then pull with some pliers. Tap the new one in with a socket of the right size.

I may be blind but I cannot find any instructions regarding the changing of the shifter seal. Any help would be appreciated.

I just changed the timing belts and had no issues. Will this job be more difficult than that?

Thanks

shifter seal way easier than belts.  once you get that shifter arm off clean the are real good first then just use a curved point ice pick to pull that thing out.  Lightly lube the new one with clean engine oil and press it in being careful to keep it square to the motor.

Thanks folks! Any suggestion as to where I should order the seal?

The most common problem with changing out the shifter

seal is the inability to replace the parts back to the

original position thereby causing shifting problems.

R-D, are you referring to the alignment of the shifter onto the shift rod extension, so it is clocked properly?

Just mark the parts with a felt pen before removing.

Good stuff here. I feel much more comfortable trying to do this job.

It just happened to me! :tickedoff:

A mere 65K and not a week home from Inzane XVI - and ready to give the ol' girl her first bath and possibly a wax...

And then I see a somewhat oily spot on the mat under the front of the engine!

A closer look...and there's telltale dry oil all around the shifter/engine interface!

Feeling just like Daniel Meyer in his earlier post!  Ice tea didn't do it, though - BikerGirl had to bring me a beer!

To top it all off the replacement seal is $3.30!!!

Thank goodness she's worth both the money and the time! :cooldude:
