there has been some news about loud noises going on in Clintonville Wi.  now, i'm not a geologist, but i think i know what it is.

i think that it is simply the ground "springing" back from when the glaciers covered the area some ten thousand years ago.  there has been situations like it before, for example read this article;

http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/news/topstory/2004/0715glacierquakes.html

there is another story i can't find, it's of an island that has a long split in it caused by the retreated ice sheet.  there are no faults in the area so scientists can only hypothisise it being caused by ice.

another clue is the lowering of water levels in the great lakes.  lake superior is 3" shallower then it was 100 years ago.  possibly because of the land raising due to the lack of ice weight.  remember, we're talking about two miles of ice!  that's a lot of weight!!

..

Why is it happening at around the same time of day. Does the earth keep a clock handy to know when to "bang"?

i think it's happening all day, but people only "hear" it at night when it's quiet.  there was a 1.5mag earthquake recorded last tuesday.
