2002 seat on a 1997 standard?

I think I have seen this subject here once before, but... Would like some input from you guys once again. I have heard that the 2001-2003 seats are a little more comfortable than the 1997-2000 seats. I have a 1997 standard and the seat is hard as a rock and very uncomfortable for more than a 20 minute ride. I have a local guy with a good reputation that said he could "memory foam" my old seat and trim it down slightly for $80.00. He got away from Gel inserts because it doesn't work as well (that is what he has been told by customers that switched from Gel to Memory Foam. Anyways are the seats interchangeable? Bike Bandit sells the seats new for just over $100.00.

The later model OEM seats look better in all the right ways, and people say
they are good.

The right person can take your crummy old 97 seat pan and turn it into

Yes, the newer generation seats (2000 and up) fit the earlier models.

  I changed the one off my 98 to a later model and I am really satisfied with the feel and comfort , and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. Its an inexpensive way to get a good ride out of the old lady. Go for it !

You can buy the 2000 and up seat from hdlparts.com brand spanking new for $84.?? bucks.

The newer seat [2000] has always been appr $100.. The memory foam seems like a good idea,but, if it doesn't work for you the switch to a new seat isn't too expensive.. I like the newer seat, I guess I'm too cheap and don't ride far enough to spring for one of expensive seats..

Changed the seat on my 98 Tourer last year. Haven't been on a trip since but did ride
150 miles yesterday. The seat fits my bottom better I'm not sure of hardness (still talking about the seats) the newer seat is more comfortable.

Bone. Amazing!!! I had a question and someone out there has a picture. You guys are great! I see that the newer seats contour in and seem a little bit narrower in the front. As suggested, I think I'll make that $86 phone call.

I'm not in New York or I would let you borrow one of mine, but I would wager that if you posted your location and a request to borrow a 2000+ seat, someone would let you borrow one for a test drive.

I put the 2000 seat on my 97, it made a big difference. The texture of the grain doesn't match the pillion seat, but I don't care. I have since gone with the airhawk cushion seat on the 2000 when I started lower back problems and my left leg foot started to tingle. I have grown to like the airhawk even after I had the cause for tingling taken care of. This set up is still cheaper than a new seat. If I am going to be off the bike for long time out in public, the airhawk is easily stowed in the saddle bag.

How does the 2000+ seat and pillion work on a 99 IS? Bolt on, or are there mods to do? I might Supervalk the girl, and may not be able to carry the IS saddle around with me.
